origins
The name cofer is a mystery. It is believed to be the shortened version of the original name Zollicofer. However, no one knows exactly why the name was shortented. If the name Cofer is the shortened version of Zollicofer then the name came from a baron from Switzerland who immagrated to the US in the late 1700's. If not then the mystery remians, but there is some speculation among family members that the Cofers may have had some Jewish ancestors. No one knows for sure.
ZolliCofer seems not to be part of my family history, since the name of Cofer appears in England as early as 1257 A.D. It was a title or job description, Cofferer. Makers of wooden boxes, and coffins, sometimes meaning keeper of the king's treasure in a wooden box.
