Surley a must visit trip for any Passing Donnelly Boy, or Girl by that matter. It was named by the First Lord Leiutenant of WA in honour of a family friend who was apparently an Admiral Donnelly in the British Navy. Go on just Google it. The first European to sight the river was Lieutenant William Preston in 1831. The river was named by James Stirling, the governor of Western Australia, in the 1830s after a friend of his family, Admiral Ross Donnelly. (Added John Donnelly)
