Name derived from Errean, a Saxon warlord. It was the combination of his name and the old English word "tun" meaning a village or small town that gave the family its surname. A common misconception is that the name came from the Erring burn, a small river near the village, which is more likely to have been named after the village rather than the other way round.
An early record containing the name was the Agincourt Men-at-Arms role, where John de Erynton is included within the entourage of Lord Grey.
