About the Gaylord surname

My most puzzling Gaylord is my 2nd great grandfather, Duane F Gaylord. He was born 19 Jan 1820 in either ME, VT, NY, MA depending on which census or history record you refer to. He popped up in IA abt 1846. He was married twice to Elvira Hammitt and Tabitha Owsley. He died 23 Jan 1881 in Cass Co, IA. During his life he was a store owner, Lawyer, auctioneer, musician, politician and also served as Sheriff for Des Moine, IA and as the town treasurer. Though I have looked for 25 years to find his parents, I can find no trace. He is my "brick wall". If anyone can provide a clue, I would be ever so grateful. All the data I have on Duane and his children and wives is at Ancestry.com under Duane F Gaylord. I can be reached at oddrie@cox.net or you can send me a message at Ancestry if you are a member.
