The author concluded that the name Hagood is English of Scottish descent. The ancient family name being, Haigh-wold/Haighwood/Hawkwood. It is of Teutonic origin, originating in northern Europe: however, the family lived along the Scottish borders. It mean "high wood or Woody Hills". Under the name of Haighwood a coat of arms was granted in 1185. Different branches of the same family were granted additional arms, ( for example, to Heywood/Haywood family) in 1838. The remaing Haighwood family in Scotland belongs to the Clan Chattan. (Clan of the Little Cat) You are referred to The Clans and Tartans of Scotland by Robert Bain 1938 which describes the clan being composed of Mackintoshes, Davidsons, Macphersons, MacGillivrays and MacBeans.
