The oldest Hirvonen -surename I have found was from 1400-era. It is listed in the official history book of (city of) Savonlinna. Before the city of Savonlinna, there were population in the area called Pihlajaniemi. In there the most common surename was Hirvonen.
In later part of 1800 the county where were most of the surenames were Hirvonen was county of Rääkkylä. When the steam boats arrived and specially the train, Hirvonen people started to move around. There is a Hirvoset club, where all the Rääkkylä originated Hirvonen family members do belong to.
Today 2013 in the Finnish register of the population, there are about 10.000 people listed, who have surename Hirvonen.
Before the Hirvonen surname club was only for those, who have originated from county of Rääkkylä. Few years ago (around 2015) they modified their rules. They started to think, from where the first Hirvonen arrived to Rääkkylä? So they changed the rules, that all persons who have surname Hirvonen can join, and how have interest to the Rääkkylä Hirvonen people.
