About the Kingi surname

Kia ora. Our surname comes form my great grandfather Kingi Te Mate, it has made us who we are today and so our name is only 3 generations old. It has been said that we took his first name as it connects us to the man and not the family, thats how it was done in the old days. I also heard that it changed as Te Mate was not a nice surname...Either way i am connected to my tupuna who are my strenght and pride....Kingi Te Mate grew up at Te Kawa under our tupuna whare Kaputuhi, he was Tainui and Maniapoto blood
