Meedin is a Sri Lankan Malay Surname that came with javanese soldiers sent to Ceylon then by Dutch to fight against the Portuguese dominated Forts along the coastal areas. Original Name should go as Meedin Palon or Amit Palon but Meedin remained and Palon and Amit was omitted. Palon and Amit also remained but Meedin omitted. The two brothers Meedin Palon and Amit Palon as regimental colour bearers reached the coastal town of Hambantota in 1796 and remained to work as commoners serving the British Governor then Leonard Wolf of "Village in the Jungle" fame. In fact my paternal grand father Mohamed Zain Meedin goes to histroy by naming his 3rd son as Johor to signify the homeland coming from Malaya. Palon is a tiny island off Johor. Seven generations have served the military and successive governments and community is now fading away mixing marriages with other communities and most of them migrating out Sri Lanka for greener and better pastures.
