About the Milsom surname

The earliest record we have so far been able to trace is in Bristol, in the Bishport area of Bedminster, out towards Bishopsworth, they appear to have been horse dealers, one was killed by a horse rolling on him October 6, 1859, at the cattle market in Bristol. John Milsom Baptized at Barton Regis, St George 1798, born October 1797 at New Church, St George (that is on the Gloucestershire side of the River Avon),was buried at St Peters churchyard, Bishopsworth 9 October 1859, horse dealer. That is on the Somersetshire side of the River Avon. With the aid of the one-name group for this surname, I have been able to track a link back through census returns etc from Sarah Jane Milsom, my grandmother, born in Swansea, in 1875. However, her father John William Milsom who was born at Bedminster Down in 1853 has only his mother's name on the birth certificate. Other people have attempted to link them with another Milsom, but his mother according to the 1851 Census was no longer living with her father and mother (Jane nee Rich?) at Bishport. Elizabeth Milsom born 1834 at Bishport, she was a servant to the family. Jane Rich was his second wife (he was a widower on the Parish Register at St Mary Redcliffe church, Bristol when they were married March 3rd 1835) so Elizabeth must have been a daughter from his first marriage. No details of her name, as yet. William Milsom, his father married Mary Hadley April 28 1788 at the church of Sts Philip and Jacob, Bristol. William was born abt 1751, and Mary Hadley abt 1758. They had 6 children altogether, William Milsom born 1790 at St George, Bristol John born Oct 1797 at New Church St George Mary born 1800 St George, Bristol Baptised 18 May 1800, St George Ann born 1806 St George Bristol Bap. 29 June 1806 Bristol Glocs Thomas born 1809 St George, Bristol, Bap. 9 April 1809, St George Matilda born 1811 St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol.
