The earliest official mention of a Saldana in the New World was that of Gregorio Saldana , a soldier and adventurer enlisted in Hernan Cortez's conquest of what is now Mexico in the year 1521 . This was the second attempt ( the first expedition in 1519 failed in its initiative to overtake the Aztec Empire , which after the Spanish triumph was re-named " New Spain " . Saldana was eventually posted to a Spanish outpost in what is now the Monterrey region ( Nuevo Leon ). His derect descendants gradually spread out and settled the regions of Coahuila ( present day northern Mexico ) and the American state of Texas . Some later travelled to California and the states of Arizona and Colorado.
. From what I could learn from previous genealogical research into our Family's history , Gregorio Saldana most likely originated from a villa in Palencia Province ( northern Spain ) named Saldana which contains ( latest census count 2010 ) about 3,500 inhabitants . It is a thriving market center / mercantile hub with a Tuesdays & Saturdays trade days events . Since it is surrounded by farms and ranches , there is also a livestock & produce sale once a week .
