The name Tipton originated in the West Midlands of England just a little west of Birmingham and east of Wolverhampton. This fact was recorded in the "Doomsday" book that recorded population and names, that book is similar to an early census record and was the first time people were given last names either as a name of their trade (miller, baker, woodright, etc) or location (Tipton, Birmingham, London, Buckingham, etc). In 1966 the town of Tipton was incorporated with a few other small towns in the area known today as Sandwell.
