The following is taken from a book named, "Haertling - Hartling Families" by Fern Hartling Wruck, 1981.

Hartling (German) The son of Hart (strong). Hartling means "little deer" pg. 89 in "Dictionary of American Family Names" by Elsdon C. Smith.
