Profiles Mentioned:

James Salter, Snr, Free Settler "Harvey" 1825 arrived in Hobart aboard the "Harvey" in 1825; with him was his wife & 3 children. While the immigration citation, now attached to his record, only notes J. Salter, I believe it is James for the following reasons:

1. James daughter, Mary Ransley is shown as born in England; Kent is suggested, inferring James was also born in England; there are no births recorded in Tasmania;
2. Of the two convicts named 'James Salter' who arrived in Hobart prior to 1840, there are no records of them being accompanied by family, or any Marriage Permissions; both were not Free Men before 1841, the date of Mary's marriage to John Ransley. I think these two can be discounted;
3. A search of marriage records for Mary & James Salter provided two possibilities, one in Devon & one in London.
The Mary & James Salter based in Lambeth, London had 8 children between 1813 and 1827. Their daughter, Mary Mayne Salter, was born 1823.
Mary & James Salter of Tiverton, Devon, had three children:
* James - born 1815 in Tiverton;
* Elizabeth - born 1819 in Tiverton, and
* Mary - born 1823, also in Tiverton
4. The Salters of Tiverton correspond to the description of J Salter disembarking the 'Harvey' in 1825, viz: James, his wife & 3 children.
5. James Salter married Charlotte Clarke in New Norfolk on 3rd Aug 1836, and was most likely James Salter Snr's son
6. The 1848 Census recorded James Salter Snr, & James Salter Jnr in two separate residences located 'near' Fenton Forest, and both owned by Michael Fenton. Interestingly, Mssrs T & C Fenton were also passengers aboard the 'Harvey' when it reached Hobart
7. The Census record for James Salter Snr shows a married couple who arrived 'free' aged between 45 & 60; undoubtedly, James & Mary; The record also shows another female (21-45 y.o.) and two children. This is most likely Elizabeth Taite (nee Slater) whose husband Henry died in 1844 (m: 1837). Elizabeth would be 29 y.o.
8. There are marriage records for Jame's 2 children:
* James married Charlotte Clarke; 1837 in New Norfolk,
* Elizabeth married Henry Taite; 1837, also in New Norfolk, and
* Mary, married John Ransley; 1841; New Norfolk
