I am interested on a general and personal level to find out more about the relationship between the Dias / Milano brothers and Joseph Saralvo / Gabriel Henriques.
We know ( Because of the witness account used by the Inquisition in Saralvo's trial and reported in “ the Marrakesh Dialogues” page 103 Among the Jews he had known in Antwerp, he named three brothers of the Dias Family, recent immigrants from Ferrara,where they had been circumcised and given the Jewish name of Milano: Antonio/Joseffo, Diogo/Jacob, Daniel/Daniel . A fourth brother Arthur/Isaac having remained in Ferrara . He declared : “ They all lived publicly as Christians but are Jews in their homes>) that this 4 brothers ( Antonio/Joseffo, Diogo/Jacob, Daniel/Daniel Arthur/Isaac " came from Portugal to Ferrara to be circumcised by Joseph Saralvo.
The rather peculiar thing was that they not only got a new religious name but also a new surname by Saralvo.
Why did Saralvo choose the “ jewish” surname Milano for the Dias Brothers?
Were they related toe Henrique Dias Milano de Caceres ( or Milaõ) and if so were they related to himself ( the members of the Henriques family are all said to be descendants of the same person?
Why did Saralvo chose this new surname for himself?
Unfortunately he died on the stake and not many records were left but maybe the VERY few members of the Saralvo family know something.
I am very intrigued.
