Anyone know the history of this change in surname?

I would like to know that, as well as how the family became involved and relocated to Rutherfordton, NC

Bridges and Hamrick sons came to NC together. Search for Bridges of the Past. I checked my uncle’s DNA and he was an “I” haplogroup. The posted Bridger family are a “J”. We are not related.

per Randi Rivenbark from Ancestry: The name change is the result of the disinheritance mentioned above. It was because Joseph Sr was a Loyalist (to the King of England) and his son had revolutionary sentiments. The lineage is well documented from Richard (1501-1560) to Lawrence to Joseph to Samuel, all in England, to the immigrant Col. Joseph (1628-1686) in VA to son Joseph II to William (b. 1680) who moved from Isle of Wight County, VA to Bertie County, NC. He had a son, William (b. about 1700) who had a son, Joseph, married to Mary Braswell. The book, THE THOMAS AND BRIDGES STORY, proposes a son, Braswell Bridges, as the father of a William, from whom I descend. The author was not sure of this part of the lineage. It doesn't work with the dates. I believe Wm & Braswell were brothers. There are records for a Braswell who belongs to another generation who must be a Jr. After this sticking point, the lineage is well documented all the way to my mother's branch in Trigg County, KY. I have DNA matches to people who descend from at least 3 of Col. Joseph's children, so I know the connection is there. Col. Jos's remains were dug up from St. Luke's Church, Smithfield, VA and taken to the Smithsonian for research.

However my line of Bridges did not leave VA until mid 1700s and travelled the Great Wagin Trail to inland N.C. along with the Hamericks as per Bridges of the Past.
