It looks like she married twice & it’s unclear which father the children had.

William Owen "Bill" Irwin

John and Rebecca (Grinnell) Doud had the following (3) children:[1]

  • John, b. 28 Feb. 1725/6; m. Temperance Chapman
  • Samuel, b. ca. 23 Feb. 1729/30; m. Lydia Lay
  • Peleg, baptized 10 Feb. 1733/4; m. Merab Ward

So this got confused in records because it looks like there were 2 men called John Doud (Doude, Dowd) who both married women called Rebecca. Apparently they were uncle / nephew and I am still unclear on which has which parents.

The Rebecca’s are easier!

Rebecca Blake married John Dowd (the nephew).

The records fail to give us any definite information in regard to the location of JOHN, 2d, and REBECCA (HIGBY), and the line has been exceedingly difficult to follow beyond that of his grandchildren.

His children were:

  • 65 ELIZABETH, b. 1738.
  • 66 JOHN (3d), b. 1739, d. 1824; m. 1763, Elizabeth Norton, d. 1814.
  • 67 REBECCA, b. 1740, d. 1797; m. Thomas Foote.
  • 68 MARY, b. 1743.
  • 69 PELEG, b. 1744, d. about 1806; m. Merab Ward. ?

——

The father may be wrong in the book and the son Peleg looks like he belongs to the uncle, who married Rebecca Wellman

——

This explains the children born after the uncle John Doud died, and therefore attributed to Rebecca Grinnell’s 2nd husband, Capt. Gideon Wellman

However, Capt Gideon and his 2nd wife had no children.

I'm afraid to touch it. I started and immediately ran into a roadblock.

I think it’s straightened out now. Flawed sources due to poor records. We did good work.

PS. 4 different Elizabeth Cornwells …

Thank you. Erica Howton I knew it was over my head.
