Hi, the parents of James should be Isaac Cantrell and Talitha Cloud.

I'm currently working on my working tree on Ancestry and everything I can find at the moment would make it impossible for Elizabeth to be his biological mother as she'd not yet married Reverend Isaac Cantrell.

The same can be said of his brother, Benjamin (Benjamin Franklin Cantrell, I).

I'm not sure who has the editing power on this / is online to fix, so I'm contacting all managers with this discussion function.

Thanks for your attention to this,

Jennifer

Thanks for the comments Jennifer. I haven't touched these Geni files in years. I use only Ancestry and Family Tree Maker now. If you want to make edits feel free... if you are confident of your sources. I probably have already changed it on Ancestry, but will check. This is my father's side of the family and we literally did not even know his grandfather's real name until about 15 years ago because he went by a nickname and no one in our family knew it. It took a lot of research. Any comments are always appreciated. Cathy

I'm not certain how to edit on here given I'm not the manager of the profiles involved.
Thanks for the information! We had a similar issue considering my dad's father isn't who we expected when I dna tested and confirmed when my dad finally tested. I've been working on his father's line since we suspected and were confirmed the info we had for so many years was incorrect. It's been nearly 4 years now and I'm still playing catch up.

Read the About of James Cantrell's father. James' mother was the second wife, Elizabeth.

Note that many of Tabitha's children named a child after her, which James did not. In fact he named a daughter Elizabeth.

I would go to the source cited on the About of Isaac Cantrell and check, but the About makes it fairly clear. It is clear that a child born in 1769 was Elizabeth's daughter.

It's common that with the first child or children born to a second wife, after the first wife died, there is some confusion or disagreement as to the parent.

Here is the pertinent part of the About:

Isaac's will left all his land to his wife for her lifetime, but the court concluded that the will was valid for the personal property, but not for the land. Peter Cantrell, Isaac's son by Elizabeth, brought an action in the Court of Common Pleas of Spartanburg County in October 1807, suggesting that one third of the land be given to the widow, Mary Cantrell, as her dower, and that the rest be divided among the 19 heirs of Isaac Cantrell. The widow had no objections, and she was assigned 200 acres, including the plantation house. The remaining land was to be sold and divided among the heirs. However, this was not likely to enrich the heirs, as the entire 862 acres was appraised at $650.50, less than $1 per acre. By the time it was divided among the 19 heirs, probably no one got more than $25. Why only 19 heirs were listed is not clear. Apparently, two of Mary Linder's children had died young, which left 23 heirs. One of Talitha's children also apparently died without heirs, but two of Talitha's children were omitted from the list of heirs: Mary Cantrell who married Sampson Bethel, and Elizabeth Cantrell who married her cousin John 'Miller John' Cantrell. James Cantrell, son of the second wife Elizabeth, was also omitted. Possibly these chose not to join in the court action; they may have been given some property by their father Isaac at an earlier time, with the understanding that it would be their share of his estate. At any rate, the list of 19 heirs has been very helpful in establishing who the children of Isaac Cantrell were. The following list of his children may not be totally accurate, but it is a much more comprehensive list than was available when the 1908 Cantrell Genealogy was written. ( byThomas G. Webb)

Private User do you have a primary source for either the date when the first wife died or when Isaac married the second wife? That would be convincing, but if your sources are Internet trees, then we need to look for better sources.

Unfortunately, the link is no longer valid. I'll see if I can find the discussion of the dispute by the heirs.

Take a look at the above, you probably have, which assigns James to Talitha.

It's unclear even who the first wife was but several of the early children named children Talitha or Cloud. Are the first 8 children hers as some sources say? If so, James is not her child.

Here from Talitha's About:

Of Isaac's first eight children, three are known to have had daughters named Talitha. Talitha Cloud was probably born about 1735, married Isaac Cantrell about 1751, and died about 1762, after having eight children. Talitha Cloud's parents are presently unknown.

I'm going to step back from this one. It looks like there were errors on my end, and that my ancestor may not belong to this set of Cantrells.

There's also apparently a lot of arguments in the Cantrell Family Genealogy group on Facebook (with documentation and DNA) that is disputing some of the older documents on the Cantrell/Cantrill/Cantril family from Susan Cantrill Christie's book and Bethel's book.

For further enrichment, I'll link the group page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/774957829232054/

I also found this: https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~cantrall/genealogy/christie/christi...

I don't feel knowledgeable enough on this line to continue.
