For in laws to be seen living together or nearby on a census report is not at all unusual. What I’m not understanding, so far, is why you think James & Addie ran off together.

PS. It’s also, in some areas and eras, difficult to find vital records, so best we can do is note the last record we can find, and suggest “died after this date.”

Munroe J. Allard and hia sister-in-law, Miss Addie Griffin, have left Lee for parts unknown. The Allards came to Lee about seven years ago from Vermont and started a boarding house. Miss Griffin came from Saranac Lake, N.Y., and lived with them. The boarding house was soon given up and they moved to a smaller house. Allard did little, if any, work. Last Wednesday a letter was handed to Mrs. Allard by which she learned that the couple had left the previous Saturday. The letter was written by the young woman and stated that Mrs. Allard could have what was left In the house. Investigation proved that the place had been pretty well cleaned out and not much of value left. Mrs. Allard has sold at private sale what was left and proposes to let the couple severely alone.

It does indeed look like “Allard” vanished & “Allen” popped into existence from no place.

But - I don’t know how to prove it without more documentation. Maybe Y DNA studies? Courthouse docs?

Allen is a rough surname (so many). Allard would be easier.

I’m posting profiles mentioned from the geni tree. Makes it easier to navigate and fill in details.

Stephen Frank Allard & Emily Cindrella Allard were the parents of Monroe James Allard who married and divorced Edna Frances Weaver

Edna was the daughter of Edward F. Manchester & Lenora "Nora" A Griffin who married 2nd to Joshua Michael Griffin Their children included Addie Lenora Allen who ran off with Munroe J. Allard, and married (no record seen) James M Allen

Their three children included a son, Oscar Joshua Allen but I don’t see that he had any sons.

So for DNA studies, you’d be using AT DNA.

I would suggest using your ancestry DNA test and uploading to GEDmatch, which is platform independent.
