Sources used in selecting profiles for the Rhodes project

Some researchers have inquired as to the manner and custom of listing and choosing and adding profiles to this Rhodes project.

Main primary attribute for listing is a documented connection to the Island of Rhodes and be identified as Jewish. Birth or Death on Rhodes is not required. Holocaust death is not required.

Sources include: Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony. The 1939 Italian Census of the Jews of Rhodes. The Rhodes Jewish Museum History of the Holocaust list of Victims. Geni Profiles with indications of connection to Rhodes, i.e. born, died, child of resident, parent of resident, Find a Grave or Billion Graves listings, earlier records of the residents of Rhodes included on various Jewish sites, lists of Rabbi.

People that will possibly be missed include children born after the 1939 Census and who were killed in the Holocaust and have no family to make a statement or produce a Page of Testimony.

One of the 1400 Pages of Testimony on yad vashem by Moshe Vital may be used but his records are evidently largely based on memory and are not able to be researched to be verified or correctly read in English.

The description of the Rhodes Project here on Geni offers a large number of books, excerpts from books, videos, lists of people or Rabbis. For the most part these have rarely been used due to lack of genealogical significance or genealogical data. This is not a history project, it's a genealogy project.

Questions, please send me a message from the Jews of Rhodes Project or on my Profile on Geni. Anyone is welcome to help, make corrections, additions, etc. The current content of this project is 2620 Profiles.

Additional online sources and resources include: The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and The Arolsen Archives, Both have become valued resources for researchers working online genealogy.

Current content of the Jew of Rhodes Project is 3175 profiles.

Here is an additional source for the Jews of Rhodes Project: In the Italian language we find the CDEC Digital Library subtitled Informazioni biografafiche . It appears to be the source of Liliana Piccoita's list of survivors of the Holocaust on Rhodes. This source traces the Jewish population of Rhodes from birth to deportation in 1944 to death in 1944/1945. It's an adjunct to the 1939 Census of Rhodes and fills in the data gap from 1939 to the 1944 deportation.

The CDEC onlus Contemporary Jewish Documentation Center Foundation is the main research institute for the history of the Jews in Italy in the contemporary age and has the largest collection of documentation concerning the Shoah in Italy. At the end of 2012, thanks to the support received following the Law n. 155/09 of 15 October 2009, the CDEC Foundation has launched an important project for the reorganization and rationalization of its information system, and for the digitization of some of its documentary collections. The ultimate goal of the project is the creation of a Digital Library thanks to which it will be possible to access, even online, both the inventory and cataloging descriptions of the institute's documentary heritage, and collections, complete or partial, of documents in digital format.

For the creation of the Digital Library, the CDEC Foundation uses an integrated architecture with the xDams Open Source platforms, for the historical archives, and Opendams, for the management of the institute's activities. The use of data in Linked Open Data (LOD) format constitutes the backbone of the entire information structure and, together with the ontology on the Shoah domain, one of the most innovative elements of the project.

I have listed the many sources I used in the Jewish Families of Rhodes project here on Geni. I have visited Rhodes, went to the Synagogue, left money in the donation box and came back with a mission to add as many profiles as I can find. I use every valid source to verify data about a person I add.

Unfortunately I am now the target of vandalism by Geni user A.P. He has been Reported to Management by several well known Geni contributors. He is still making changes to profiles.

It's a form of antisemitism to remove items from a Profile of a Jewish person. For example, was the Holocaust in Greece and Rhodes connected to World War II? According to A.P. No. Not connected.

Please, if you see evidence of this and other related changes to profiles please report them to Geni Management.

Antisemitic Vandalism continues with revisions to profiles in the Jews of Rhodes and Izmir Projects. Revisions are hidden, details are hidden, and they keep on coming despite Reports to Geni Management by several of the participants in these projects that I manage. This vandal uses initials A.P. to conceal his actual identity. There are many Geni users using the initials A.P. so tracking his activity is difficult for ordinary users.

Geni user A.P. continues to remove profiles from the Jewish Families of Rhodes project. Profiles that are the subject of this version of his vandalism seem to be people whose children were born on the Island of Rhodes but they themselves are not presently recorded as being born or live on the Island.

Referring to the statement of purpose of this Project, and most of the other Geni Town Projects, we find that actual birth or death in the subject location is not a required trait for inclusion in a Project. Having a child born on Rhodes is sufficient cause for addition of the parents to the Jewish Families of Rhodes Project.

These Projects are a work in progress, as more data is recorded or researched eventually the parents will be identified as residents of a certain house. The ultimate genealogical goal of these Town Projects is to record the recognition of a Jewish person in a specific residence.

So what is the Antisemitic Vandal thinking about when he removes a parent's profile from the the Jewish Families of Rhodes Project? Perhaps A.P. can come forward in this forum and explain his actions. He has also denied that the Holocaust and World War II are connected by his removing the references to the WWII Project in the profiles on the Jewish Families of Rhodes Project.

Bonjour Dan

Aujourd'hui une petite pensée pour vous

Additional recent vandalism by Geni user A.P. includes removal of numerous "unknown" statements on Profiles in the Jews of Rhodes Project here on Geni. The one word "unknown" is meant to tell the reader that research has been done and no records were found.

So A.P. spent his time deleting "unknown" from profiles. He could have spent his time researching some other profiles.

I suggest you look at the "revisions" tab on any profile before starting to do research.

Bravo for your tireless and thorough work, Dan!

Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama, United States added as a useful Source of graves and memorials of the Jewish people that came to Montgomery from Rhodes.

Immediately Geni abuser A.P. started his mission to change and delete Profile information.

Seems like this is a monthly report on the vandal A.P. He tried to make some changes to a profile so I alerted the Curator's and one of them became very interested in this activity. This recent removal from a profile of good solid information by A.P. spurred Curator Emil to put the stop to it as he made the profile a Master and Blocked the vandal. Thank you Emil.
