This is about Inconsistency and Source conflict. Well on my part there is no inconsistency. My Great Grandfather Henry like just about all of his family. were born in Richmond Victoria Australia. But try as you might to put that in, on your enter page is these pop up places and when you put Richmond Victoria Australia. It comes up with Richmond City of Yarra Victoria Australia or it brings up Richmond with a post Code. You should remove all of these things from the Entry page. For instance Not all People born in England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales, were born in the United Kingdom, this title did not come into being till much later. Also Some people born in Victoria, Australia, in the early times come under the Colony of New South Wales, Australia. Also on death Certificates places of death are plainly listed and you should be able to put what is listed on it as place of Death, that includes house No, or Hospital, or Nursing home. You should also be able to put place of Burial, which is the Cemetery they are buried in, this is clearly listed on the death Certificate. The Address of the Cemetery is not there place of Burial, and people look for a cemetery, not an address. These restrictions you have on here, show that this was set up by a person that knows nothing about Genealogy. I have been a Genealogist since 1979, I worked with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints between 1997 and 2017 in their Heidelberg Stake Genealogical Library, and I am an Online Parish Clerk for a Parish of St Michael, Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset, England .
Also while I have your attention, could you please tell me why? when you go to the remove button on someone, because they have been added to your page, and they are not your relation, not connected in any shape or form. The thing comes up you cannot remove as this will split the tree. Well if the thing aloud you to remove people who are not relations of yours, it would make it a lot easier for eveyone. I know who I am related too. I have one side of my family back to 970 and the other to as far back as the Queen can go, as I am related to the Royals in 5 ways. Well I for one am sick of people breaking the first rule of Genealogy, which is "You cannot pick a Family and slot yourself into it," it just does not work, you have to research and obtain Certificates. I had not been on Geni for a long time as I was looking after a sick husband and when he recovered, our daughter was struck down with an unknown illness, which she is still suffering from. My husband's Nephew Simon Mensfourth invited me to grow the tree on Geni. When I added my Great Great Grandparents William Sharp and his wife Mary Ann Sibley I could not add the details as your popups again stopped that. My daughter was struck with another illness, so I did not continue, with adding people. The day before yesterday I discovered that other people have been added to my Mary Ann Sibley also she had been stated to have been born in a place she was not. I removed these places and put her correct place. I used the proper things to try and remove the people that was added, by a Janet Hayes, who somehow is also listed on my page when she is not connected to me. I sent her a message. Yesterday I went to Mary Ann Sibley, and all these people above her are now blank. But because they are there I cannot add Mary Ann Sibley's real parents to her which are William Robert Sibley and Ann Hales. There is also an Elizabeth Ward married to a Thomas Trenaman listed as the daughter of my Alfred Samuel Ward and his wife Julia Rendell, They never had a daughter Elizabeth and Alfred did not have a sister Elizabeth. David Prins merged this into my tree, on 19 Jan 2023, when I contacted him about it. He said he did not do it, but I received an Email from Geni stating he did. Now this is another person attached to my family that I cannot remove. This is rediculous how do you expect people to do their family history, when you allow anyone like David Prins who said he merged it to see what was different. Then just leaves it there and does nothing. Before they merge anything with your tree, they should make contact with you. You should also tell him, that my tree is my tree, they are my ancestors I do know who they are. Regards Margaret Grace Silva

Hi Margaret Grace Silva . Firstly, if any user creates or merges an incorrect connection to a Geni family tree, it should be severed as soon as it has been detected. And if any user wilfully causes errors, that user is guilty of profile/tree vandalism that has disciplinary consequences which may include expulsion from the site. Any user who becomes aware of such vandalism can report the user either through the <Report> option direct from the user's own profile page, or by sending an email to misconduct@geni.com. Management (also called Customer Service, or CS for short) has developed a detailed and strict protocol over the years to deal with such things.

Secondly, it is important to keep in mind that the Word-wide Family Tree (WFT) on Geni functions differently from almost any other family tree website. The WFT is ONE family tree and all profiles are connected to the main tree through the relevant branches. For a better explanation, please see this Geni article. Therefore, any profile you or I (or any other user) might add is eligible to be merged with an existing duplicate profile and/or edited by another user, with the proviso in the following paragraph.

Thirdly, there is a proviso as to who is allowed to edit and/or merge a profile: on the one hand profiles marked public are open to all users for editing and merging. On the other hand profiles marked private can only be edited/merged by its managers and users who are close family members -- not even a curator may interfere in these cases.

Fourthly, profiles are always public if the person was born more than 150 years ago and the profile contains no private or sensitive information related to living or famous persons. Private profiles are those who are still living (there is no option to make these public), as well as those born less than 150 years ago. However, it is possible to force a deceased profile born less than 150 years ago public, but this option is only available to the profile manager and/or Geni users who are immediate family members.

Fifthly, the above means that a user's own family tree on the WFT can only be secured against merging/editing by other users if it contains exclusively private profiles, none of which were born more than 150 years ago.

Finally, I can personally vouch for the integrity and accuracy of Private User as one of our most meticulous and careful curators. I would be very surprised if he had made any mistake, but then again mistakes are made every day and we are all liable to make at least a few. If you feel that David has made a mistake, please write to him direct. I'm certain that he will respond in a professional and kind manner, and if he is found to be in the wrong, he will not hesitate to acknowledge and correct it immediately.

Well Herman, I did send a reply to to David Prins, Although he did merge two profiles of Alfred Samuel Ward and his wife Julia together, and he said he did it to see what was happening. In one was a Elizabeth Ward, stated to be their daughter, born in 1841, and that she married in South Australia, 25 Jan 1862 at Willunga to a Thomas Trenaman. She died 26 Aug 1908 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia aged 67 years. The problem with this is that Alfred was born in 1825, and Julia in 1835. They did not Marry until 1853. Alfred never had a daughter named Elizabeth and he did not have a sister Elizabeth either. Now I am left with Elizabeth attached to my family, and she does not belong. In the South Australian Records there is one Elizabeth Ward born in 1841 her father is Thomas Ward, also no relation to my family. But no body will take this off of this tree. Now I have Leanne M (Volunteer Curator - Australia, who has attached People to my Mary Ann Sibley who came out on the Lord George Bentinck in 1849. She has attached Thomas Campkin Sibley + his wife Hannah Foster as her Parents. Well they are not her Parents were William Robert Sibley and Ann Hales, all of Dartford, Kent, England.. How are you expected to have a true and accurate Tree, when you have these so called experts attaching people without even doing any research. Or even asking you if they belong to you. I have sent messages but they just ignore you. Their response is for you to start a discussion. I do not want any discussion, I just want them removed. I have done my DNA, and I have one side of my family back to 930. The other side I can go back as far as the Royal Family can go, as I am a descendant of Edward the 1st. I am also a Family History Specialist, I have been since 1979. I worked with the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints, in their Heidelberg Stake in Victoria, Australia between 1997 and 2017. My Ancestor Joseph Smith and his wife Emma started the Church. Regards Margaret Silva

It is against Geni’s terms and conditions to remove information added by other users.

If you believe something is incorrect you should add your sources to the profile, start a discussion from the profile, and engage in a discussion with the other interested parties, profile managers and family.

Once a consensus is reached then changes can be made.

Prior to this you should not

  • disconnect relationships
  • blank out names and information
