This John Strickland's parents are Jefferson Strickland and Harriet Wilson. Jefferson's parents are Jonathon Campbell Strickland and Appa Strickland. How can we make this line correct?

Hi William, I ended up here today trying to trace farther back on the Strickland line of a DNA match I have on My Heritage. His tree only goes back to James M. Strickland and wife Missouri Laurisa Strickland (born Poppell). When I got as far back using Hints on Ancestry, there isn't any real documentation or consensus showing for the parentage of this John Strickland.

So I Googled hoping to find some definitive answers and this was really all I found:

1. JOHN9 STRICKLAND (WILLIAM8, AARON7, AARON6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, MATTHEW3, JACOB OR JAMES2, ???1) was born Abt. 1802 in Barnwell Co., SC, and died in date and place unknown. He married ELIZABETH (ELIZA) CHESTER 1 Jan 1814 in Tattnall Co., GA, daughter of ABEL CHESTER and ???. She was born Abt. 1802 in Barnwell Co., SC, and died in date and place unknown.

Children of JOHN STRICKLAND and ELIZABETH CHESTER are:
i. UNNAMED MALE10 STRICKLAND, b. Abt. 1815, Tattnall Co., GA?.
ii. UNNAMED FEMALE1 STRICKLAND, b. Abt. 1816, Tattnall Co., GA?.
iii. UNNAMED FEMALE2 STRICKLAND, b. Abt. 1818, Tattnall Co., GA?.

https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~shamm/genealogy/strickland.html

which lists this John's father as William Strickland

2. this site also listing John's father as William:

WILLIAM8 STRICKLAND (AARON7, AARON6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, MATHEW3, JACOB2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1784 in ,Robeson Co,NC, and died WFT Est. 1809-1875 in ,Clinch Co,GA.He married ANNA ? Abt. 1800 in ,Barnwell Co, SC.She was born Unknown, and died Unknown in Clinch County, Georgia.

Children of WILLIAM STRICKLAND and ANNA ? are:

I tried connecting my DNA cousin match on the Strickland lines using the lineage back to Rebeuen Jefferson (varies how that's listed) and it makes the connection too distant to fit with the DNA match. I haven't yet tried to connect him via this William's lineage to see if that works. I'll have to work on that and get back to this discussion if that fits with the DNA match.

That said, this site:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~strickland/Documents/Lineage/Johns/John...

indicates that this John's lineage is unproven and having him as the John who was married to Appa, which I believe is an error because, again, it makes the lineage too far back for my DNA match on this branch of the Strickland lines:

Unproven Lineages

Bladen County, North Carolina:
Was a John Strickland born about 1749 in Bladen County, the son of John Strickland of Halifax or Northampton County?
Was this John married twice ? First to Appa (Unknown) and then to Eliza Chester on 1 Jan 1814 in Tattnall Co.,GA

I'd definitely like to get this branch sorted and correctly connected, but I'm not at all familiar with other branches like I am with my own direct branch, so I'm just trying to figure out the DNA match 'supposedly' from this branch.

Any further assistance appreciated.

I changed my tree connections to this John being the son of Willam and all I've been able to conclude is that however the DNA match I'm working on is related to me on the Strickland lines, that's clearly not our nearest shared lineage, since he's my DNA 4th cousin once removed and none of the Strickland connections work for that. lol Since he only included his maternal Strickland line in his tree, I'm likely more closely related on the missing paternal side not showing on My Heritage. Oh well! lol

So the John Strickland you have is different than my John. There were a total of 6 Williams and 13 Johns

You
→ Debra Kim Hayes GS3487094
your mother → Sue Carol McGarity / Webster / Hayes
her mother → Manuel Jesteen Strickland
her father → Charles Strickland
his father → Jackson John Strickland
his father → Richard Strickland
his father → David Jonathon Strickland
his father → John Campbell Strickland
his father → John R. Strickland, I
his father → William Abner Strickland, I
his father

Yep, William, I have your branch connected in my tree using your connections here on Geni. You and I are distant Strickland cousins but you're more closely related to my son Len Ingram on your shared Helms lines. Our common Strickland ancestors are f Matthew Strickland, II and Ann Braswell. Your common ancestors on Len's paternal side are George Isaac Helms, I and Mary Margaret Helms (Faulkenburg). :)
