There is no documented marriage for Maren and Nikolai Olsen Barbo. The only document that alludes to them being married is the birth/baptismal record of Karen Nikolaisdatter Barbo. Nikolai Olsen can also be found as the spouse of Siri Olsdatter (born 1818) with a documented marriage in 1841. They had a family of five children. The are listed in the Norway Censuses for 1865, 1875 and 1891.

Why do you think they were married?

The baptismal record of Karen Nikolaisdatter shows that Nikolai Olsen just is a witness to her baptism and her marriage record is only a primary source for her marriage, not her birth.

The reason I think they are married is because GENI lists them as being married in the profiles. The birth records do not state the parents are married; they only state each parent's name.
You are absolutely correct. A marriage record is not a primary source for birth, but sometimes it is all we get. My continued research indicates, in this case, that we are talking about two different Karen Nikolaisdatter. So, the question is not who the father is, but who her spouse is, and who son Ole Paul Pedersen Barbo (who is my great-uncle) belongs to.
The following is the birth record I have found for Ole's mother:
Karen Nikolaisdater
in the Norway, Church Records, 1812-1938

Baptism Municipality Orkland
Father Nicolai Olsøn
Mother Maren Olsdater

Although Peder Olsen (Skjolberg) was Ole's father, Karen did not marry him, but married Erik Martinussen. The 1910 Census for their family agrees with her birthdate in her baptismal record. Usually census reports list only the year, but this particular year the whole birthdate was stated.

So, the issue here is that we are dealing with two different Karen Nicolaisdatters, and yes, the one that I first addressed belongs to the family and parents listed as Nikolai Pedersen and Andrea Andersdatter, but she did not marry Erik Martinussen. He married Karen Nikolaisdatter whose parents were Nikolai Olsen and Maren Olsdatter.

I do not mean to inundate you with all these records (and there are more that I have consulted), but want to show how I arrived at what I feel is correct now. I don't think that Karen Nicolaisdatter, the daughter of Nikolai Pedersen and Andrea Andersdatter was married to Erik Martinussen, nor that she was the mother of Ole Paul Pedersen Barbo. And, beacause there is confusion about this, I created another GENI profile for the mother of Ole as Karen Barbo with the maiden name of Nikolaisdatter. Our GENI profile for Ole is titled as Ole Paul Pedersen Barbo and his father as Peder Olsen. There are two other Peder Olsen Skjolbergs in GENI who I believe are the same person, but not associated with the same relationships. They undoubtedly are in the “to be merged section” of GENI.

Finally, I believe the following shows that Karen Nikolaisdatter, daughter of Nikolai Pedersen and Andrea Andersdatter, may have been married to someone else:
Karen Nikolaisdtr. Liøkild

Thank you for motivating me to research this further. I appreciate that you took the time to consider my queries and responded to my discussions so quickly. Best regards, Donna Pagenkopf Libal

Have found more information about Nikolai Olsen Barbo and Maren Olsdatter in FamilySearch. They have other children than Karen. and I need to explore their profiles further (which do have primary sources). The possibility of Nikolai Olsen Barbo (the father of Karen Nikolaisdatter) being married to Siri Olsdatter has become questionable -- that union has not been posted to his GENI profile, but I commented about it in the initial post for this discussion..........Donna Pagenkopf Libal
