Don't know exactly how, but my DNA matches this Giles Martin line of ancestors - I'm a direct Martin and we are not exactly sure past Joseph Martin, II - his yDNA is R-BY27212

Must be though the Fitzpatrick link in some way?

Ann Martin (Ingram) his wife was my 4th cousin.

Giles my 11th cousin, a bit too far removed for a DNA match.

Suzan, this Martin line is R1b, so they are not related to us in modern times. R-BY27212 is R1a, and this is in my direct paternal line.

Giles and his mother Philadelphia appear to be related to my maternal line. Mom' is a Hopkins, and that line immigrated to Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. I tested my Hopkins uncle for BigY, and proved this connection.

My fourth great grandfather is Joseph Martin, born 1760, died April 24, 1833. Buried in Old Macedonia Cemetery, 612 Percival Rd., Richland Co., SC. He is father to Joel E. Martin, my 3rd great grandfather. My brother did the BigY700. At the BigY500 level, he was R-BY27212. Upon later doing the BigY700, we are now Confirmed Haplogroup of R-FTB64834 (which is downstream of R-BY27212). So Joseph Martin is NOW Confirmed Haplogroup of R-FTB64834. Just thought I'd share. At this point I've still been unable to determine Joseph's parents or origins. I suspect we immigrated down from Virginia but have no solid proof. Wish some additional Martins would do BigY700, esp. in VA.

Patricia, thanks for reminding me to revisit my tree and update the new haplogroup on your Martin line. And thanks for upgrading your brother's test. FTDNA estimates that the common ancestor of R-FTB64834 was born about 1550 AD. So we are a full century closer in time with this update, since R-BY27212's common ancestor was born about 1450.

On a historical note, the common ancestor of R-FTB64834 was likely born during the reign of Henry VIII - if the current estimation is close to being accurate..
