In early 1943, my mother was in hospital in Mbeyaym Tanganyika, waiting the birth of my younger brother.
In her diary:she mentions Diana arriving by aeroplane, and describes her as stunningly beautiful, but "made up to the nines"

Her diary entry:-

Sat on the verandah & did bead things, no tea-party today.
Soon after 10:00 a plane arrived, having been delayed two days by bad weather, & they came for breakfast. One of them was fair & beautiful, so much so that I thought she must be Diana Crewe-Read as there couldn't be two such exquisites in the world, & it was. Made up to the nines & I should think she would be as lovely without. They went off – & circled round & came down again & returned, luggage & all: they had bumped into a storm & it had smashed two struts of one wing. So Diana chatted with me all day & was sweet. She is only 22. She had a miscarriage & then got a daughter, now a year, called Joanna (a la racehorse). Joe is now a Major, & has his Battalion at Nanyuki & she is going to join him. Not allowed to take Joanna, & she will have to take a job in Kenya. We talked about all sorts of things & I did enjoy her so. Joe is R.C.& her parents are very Anglo-Catholic but she doesn't approve, particularly about confessions. She said she couldn't help feeling she would rather have been somebody's mistress than a wife, as she hated the thought of the hum-drum, staid, permanence of marriage. I can quite understand why she feels that, as she is so lovely many men must have fallen in love with her & she is still too young & attractive & gaiety-loving to be glad of the safety of it. Luckily Joe is so good-looking that she probably won't "get tired of him" before she does reach that stage. She knew several of the people mentioned in that book "The Last Enemy", & we also talked of Kenya people, etc. I wish you didn't slap on the make-up so thickly though. Also scarlet nails, very long.
