The obituary for John Washington McDougal is the only reference, I have found, to reference the death of Duncan McDougal. That obituary, printed in the Coldwater (Michigan) Daily Reporter on 16 Jul 1923 (see media in the profile) says the Duncan died two years after Margaret died. That would give a date of about 1853.
My branch of the McDougals (Duncan->Hiram->Warren->Dalton, etc) has always understood that Duncan left his children with neighbors and took off to parts unknown.
