I’m certainly not an expert on this Messer family, like the late Brenda Messer and a few others who have done such great work. However, there are some clear fundamental errors regarding Christian Messer ( ca. 1750 - 1831) and Christian Sergeant Messer, (1760/61 - 1859) that are repeated across literally hundreds of online family trees. This includes almost every tree on ancestry, the official entry on WikiTree, the description on Find a Grave, geni profiles, etc. etc..

It’s understandable that descendants could confuse and conflate two different ancestors who shared a relatively uncommon name, and who lived at roughly the same time in roughly the same area. However, Christian Messer and Christian Sergeant Messer were absolutely and unquestionably two different, unrelated men.

The “first” Christian Messer lived in the area of Surry County, North Carolina that later became Stokes County, in a settlement called Town Fork. He is listed in the tax lists of Surry County beginning in 1771. He appears in nearly every extant tax list for the next 25 years, as well as the 1790 federal census of Stokes.

Christian Messer was also mentioned in the 1781 diary of a German preacher who baptized Christian's son at the house of William Wingfield. William Wingfield also lived in Town Fork. The preacher mentions that “Wingfield’s wife (Mary) was born a Messer,” and it is believed Christian Messer and Mary Messer Wingfield were siblings.

Christian Messer appears to have moved to Tennessee by the late 1790s. He purchased land in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1819, and wrote his will in Hawkins in 1828.

In the 1786 tax list, Christian Messer is listed with two boys and four girls. In the 1790 census, he is recorded with four boys and four girls.

His 1828 will divides his Hawkins land between three sons, John, Isaac, and Jacob, and mentions his “other children.“ These other children probably include Michael Messer, who lived on adjoining property in Hawkins and from whom Isaac Messer bought land, and Catherine Messer, who married John Shelton of Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1805.

As the head of a Surry County household in 1771, this Christian Messer would have been born about 1750 and perhaps earlier. He died by 1831 when his will was probated in Hawkins county, Tennessee.

This Christian Messer was never referred to in any records as Christian Sergeant Messer.

Furthermore, Christian Messer of Surry / Stokes, North Carolina, and Hawkins, Tennessee WAS NOT the son of Capt. Robert Messer, the Regulator leader hung by Governor Tryon in 1771. (By extension Mary Messer Wingfield WAS ALSO NOT Capt. Robert Messer’s daughter.)

Among other reasons this Christian COULD NOT have been Captain Robert Messer‘s child was the fact that the Captain’s son was reported to be 11 years old when his father was hung in 1771, and is always described as a “young boy.” Christian Messer of Surry / Stokes was already in his 20s in 1771, living hundreds of miles away.

This Christian Messer was mistakenly and incorrectly connected to Capt. Robert Messer when, during the pre-internet days of yore, earlier researchers found references to a Christian Messer in “The Annals of Haywood County.” This book states that Christian Sergeant Messer of Haywood county, North Carolina was the young boy that stood up to Gov. Tryon before his father Capt. Robert Messer’s 1771 hanging.

However, Christian Sergeant Messer of Haywood was an entirely different person than Christian Messer of Surry / Stokes. As shown by his tombstone inscription and supported by multiple census records, Christian Sergeant Messer was born about 1760/1761 the right age to be Capt. Robert Messer’s son, and also 10 years or more after the birth of the other Christian Messer.

Both men appear separately in the 1790 North Carolina federal census. Christian Messer of Surry / Stokes is listed with four sons and three daughters in Stokes County, while “Serget” Messer of Rowan County is listed hundreds of miles away with one son and two daughters. It should be noted that the first Christian Messer never shows up anywhere other than Surry / Stokes and Hawkins, and the second Christian Sergeant Messer is never recorded in those counties.

Furthermore, whereas the first Christian Messer was deceased by 1831 when his will was probated in Hawkins, Tennessee, Christian Sergeant Messer is still alive in 1840 in Haywood county, North Carolina where he is listed in that US federal census.

Brenda Messer, the official Messer family, historian, understood this decades ago. I believe she worked out Christian Sergeant Messer’s children. From the census records it seems his sons include Frederick Messer, Thomas Messer, George Messer, David Messer and Christian Sergeant Messer Jr., as well as a John Messer and Michael Messer of Haywood who were different men than the Hawkins county sons of the first Christian Messer.

The first Christian Messer’s wife was named Sarah and nicknamed Sally. This is shown by the 1781 baptism reference as well as Christian’s 1828 will. I don’t believe Brenda Messer ever found the name of Christian Sergeant Messer’s wife. She was not Jane Barnett Freeman, who married Christian Sergeant Messer, Jr., in 1835, And she was probably not named Sarah, which was the name of the wife of the other Christian.

While the first Christian Messer could not have been the son of Captain Robert Messer, it seems likely that the Christian Sergeant Messer was, although I have personally never seen any absolute proof. Capt. Robert Messer is often listed as the son of James Mercer of Pennsylvania. However, I understand their Y DNA is completely different, making this impossible. Capt. Robert Messer is usually given a middle name of Johann, even though middle names were extremely rare at that time, and the German Johann, or Jan was almost always used as a first name.

In terms of Capt. Robert Messer‘s wife being an Indian named Mary Ann Basket, I suppose that’s possible but I highly doubt it, especially since she is often listed as being one year old when she started having children.

The above is based upon primary source documentation, rather than conjecture or the perhaps understandable human desire to connect to a “glamcestor.” It is certainly not offered to offend anyone, but to hopefully further critical thinking and fact based genealogy. M. W. Walker

Thank you for your detailed analysis. I think I’ve got the geni tree straightened out, but I’m unsure o Solomon Messer Do you know where he belongs?

Also unsure about Jamers Messer

Re: Solomon, here's his Sevier Co., TN death certificate. He's also listed in the 1850 census for Cocke County, TN as one of several children of Jane and Jackson Messer of NC.

Next door neighbors of Jackson Messer are heads of households: Thomas and Elihu Messer, both also from North Carolina.

Also the marriage certificate for Jane Barnett Freeman (daughter of Joshua Freeman), and Christian S. Messer, in Haywood, North Carolina, dated February 2, 21, or 24 (hard to read), 1835.

I have attached to Jane Barnett Messer who should not be married to John Messer (unless there is valid proof I have yet to see).

There's more to this family's story: The exact same family headed by "Jackson" Messer in Cocke Co. TN, 1850 census is again portrayed in the 1860 census, but under the name he used on his marriage certificate, Christian S. Messer.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9BSH-P56?view=inde...

Same children, only everybody is about ten years older: Angelina, Nelly, Anna, Solomon, Miriam (age 7), Ashby (age 5), Rachael (age 3).

Neighbors Thomas and Elihu Messer have disappeared from the later census.

Erica that looks great thank you! This cleaning and sourcing project that you are spearheading is one of the most important things going on at Geni these days. It's especially invaluable in the age of copycat drone genealogy.

And Debra thank you for some of the supplemental info.

I'd suggest just a few tweaks to the CSM of Haywood. profile.

Under the top blue section third line, at the end "His wife..i" its not clear who the preposition refers to. I would perhaps say something like "Christian's wife is currently unknown)

The last sentence in the blue box, maybe change "... Christian Messer who married ... " to "Christian Messer of Surry County. " Believe it or not there are two other Christian Mosers in that area, one of whom also married a Sally.

There's also a Christian Messer from Pennsylvania who fought in the Revolution and drew a pension in Indiana / Ohio. He and his Revolutionary War records sometimes gets mixed up in this mishigas.

Debra its very possible he went by Jackson to differentiate himself from his father with the same name, and then when his father had passed, he reverted to CSM.?

It's plausible. Here's Christian S. Messer age 40-50 in the 1840 Haywood County census with wife age 30-40 and three girls under age 5:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YB9-9ZMB?view=ind...

Ninth name down on the list.

I'm going to post a long message from the late Brenda Messer who was the expert on all things Messer. Debra you probably knew Brenda or of her. When I looked into the Messers years ago I was able to find a little more, but as you can she understood the different families and relationships. I've also double checked her sources - at least for the earlier generations - and they are all on point.

These are only part of her notes but this does do a good job to group the families into two separate clans. I don't know where this could or should be posted but I'm sure she would have liked to know they were shared with anyoone interested.

I am sorry to say that I cannot connect your family line to that of the Messer family in Haywood County, NC, although I do think there is a possible connection. The oldest known ancestor [that I have] of that family line is Christian Messer and wife, Sarah "Sallie" [presumably her maiden name was Hunter]Christian was born about 1750 in NC and died after May 28, 1831 in Hawkins County, NC when his will was written. His son John sold land that was left to him in 1834, so it Christian had died by that time.He was about 11 years older than the
Christian Sargent "Sarget" Messer , born about 1761 in NC, son of Captain Robert Messer, who died as a result of the Battle of Alamance [May 16, 1771] on June 19, 1771 in Hillsborough, NC with five other Regulators who refused to give up the values that they had fought for to swear allegiance to Lord Hillsborough [Governor Tryon] and The King of England.

Christian Sargent "Sarget" Messer died sometime prior to the 1850 census in Haywood County, NC or at least that is what we believe to be true.He was listed in the 1840 census of Haywood County, NC.There is no documentation to prove who our Christian Messer was married to and until I can find something, I have to leave the name of his wife with a great big {?}.

Here is what I have on the Christian Messer, born 1750 and wife Sarah, also known as Sallie".

Descendants of Christian MESSER

Generation No. 1

1.CHRISTIAN1 MESSER was born Abt 1750, and died Aft. May 28, 1831 in Hawkins County, TN. He married SARAH "SALLIE" HUNTER. She was born Abt 1750. (mww: not sure of maiden name)

Notes for CHRISTIAN MESSER:

This is a citation from my book, The Registry - The Descendants of David MESSER, made by me in reference to the identity of my Christian Sargent MESSER of Haywood County, NC.

"Our Christian MESSER was not old enough to be listed as a head of household in the 1771 Surry County, NC Tax list ("Surry County, NC Taxables 1771 to1790").

It is possible that the Christian MERCER that was listed in the 1781 and 1784 Surry County, NC Tax List ("Surry County, NC Taxables 1771-1787" ) could be an ancestor, but highly unlikely. This Christian was listed with the household of William WINGFIELD.In 1783, a child by the name of Jeriamias, born to Christian and Sarah MESSER, was baptized in the home of William WINGFIELD, by a Moravian Minister.

From the various documents and Correspondence that I have searched, I am sure that this is the Christian MESSER, who was married to Sarah HUNTER who settled in Hawkins County, TN and died in 1831. His will mentions his wife, Sally, sons, Jacob, John and Issac and the rest of my children.

(mww note: I did find that the Michael Messer listed as a sibling of one of the Christians Messer Michael Messer may instead be another son of Christian and Sally The following is memory at the moment :- As I recall he was born about 1782 in Surry. He moved to Hawkins with the family. I think there was some kind of land bust or scandal I found references in newspapers of the time, and this caused a rift in the family. Michael had at least three Messer daughters Rebecca Elizabeth and Mary who married three Patterson brothers. )

There are other examples of a Christian MESSER listed on the Early Tax Lists of NC, but it has been impossible to determine if he was our ancestor or not.The first listing that seem most likely to be our Christian was in the 1790 Rowan County NC Census and he was listed as Sargent MESSER.As you can see in the previous Census Records, he was listed in Haywood County, in 1830 as Sergett MESSER and in 1840 as Sargeritt MESSER " Page #45

Will of Christian MESSER

Page 353 Dated: May 28, 1831

I, Christian MESSER of Hawkins County and State of Tennessee, being in sound mind and having a desire to dispose of my worldly affairs while I possess a full strength of mind, I constitute this my last Will and Testament. After committing my body to the dust and my soul to God, I do dispose of my worldly property as follows, to wit: In the first place, I allow my just debts to be paid.I will and bequeath to my wife Sally MESSER her maintenaNCe off the tract of land I now live on during her lifetime. I will and bequeath to my three sons Jacob, John and Isaac MESSER the tract of land I now live on, to be equal divided among them, and I moreover allow my three sons Jacob, John and Isaac within twelve months after my decease to pay to each of my other children the sum of five dollars. I also allow my movable property and stock to be sold and equally divided amongst the hole of my children. And I do empower William YOUNG, Stanwic HORD, and Samuel MCFEETERS, Jr. my executors of this my last Will & Testament. Given under my hand and seal this 28th day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-one.

Notes from Robert CASEY, 7202 Duffield Drive, Dallas, TX 75248; November 1, 1987

"Christian MESSER and his wife, Sally lived in Hawkins County, Tennessee from 1819 to 1831. Their daughter, Catherine (born 1780 - 1790), married John SHELTON in 1805 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Catherine and her brother, John MESSER (born 1783), moved to Jackson County, Alabama, by 1840.Over 5,000 descendants of John SHELTON and Catherine MESSER SHELTON will be published in the Book #"Shelton, Winiger and Pace Families" in the very near future. Also included in this Book #will be around 50 MESSER and descendants, primarily originating from wither Hawkins County, Tennessee or Jackson County, Alabama".

"According to a SHELTON Family Bible, John SHELTON and his wife, Catherine, were married in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1805.According to the 1830 census of Scott County, VA, the wife of John SHELTON, (Catherine MESSER) was born between 1780 and 1790.The 1880 census of Scott County, VA lists Martin SHELTON (son of Catherine MESSER) and indicates that Martin's mother was born in North Carolina since Tennessee was part of North Carolina when Catherine MESSER was born and because Tennessee did not become a state until 1796, implies that Catherine was probably born in North Carolina (maybe the part that later became Tennessee).Christian MESSER was therefore the father of at least one daughter:

Catherine MESSERB.1780 -1790, NC

In 1819, Christian MESSER purchased 103 acres of land on the south side of the Holston River in Hawkins County, Tennessee.Christian paid $900.00 to William YOUNG for this land.In 1821, the will of a Christian MESSER was written in Hawkins County, Tennessee. The will mentions Christian MESSER'S wife, Sally. It also mentions three sons by name and states that the three sons pay "each of my other children the sum of five dollars" from the proceeds of the sale of one tract of land. The three sons mentioned were:

John MESSERb. 1783, NC

Isaac MESSERb. 1790 1800

Jacob MESSER

In 1834, John MESSER, sold a "parcel of land that fell by heirship of Christian MESSER, deceased to his brother, Isaac MESSER. In 1835, the land owned by Christian MESSER was divided between his three heirs. Jacob MESSER received one lot and Isaac MESSER received another.Isaac MESSER also received John MESSER'S share which Isaac purchased from John in 1834.

Because Catherine MESSER SHELTON was known to have resided in Jackson County, Alabama in the early 1800's, it is logical to believe that many of the MESSERS living in that area during the same period that Catherine lived there are probably related. Other MESSERS living in Jackson County, Alabama were:

Michael MESSER b.1782, NC

Thomas MESSERb.1785

This is supported by Ashery SELLERS ANDERSON who states the John SHELTON married Catherine MESSER.This inclusion of this material will hopefully result in more conclusive documentation to surface".

John MESSER is the son of Christian and Sally MESSER.John was born in 1783 in North Carolina. In 1830, John MESSER (born 1770 to 1780) was living in Hawkins County, Tennessee. In 1834, John MESSER sold a "parcel of land that fell by heirship of Christian MESSER, deceased to his brother, Isaac Messer. In 1835, the land owned by Christian MESSER was divided between his three heirs.Jacob MESSER received one lot and Isaac MESSER received another.Isaac MESSER also received John MESSER's share which Isaac purchased from John in 1834.

He's married as Christian S. in 1845, listed as Jackson in the 1850 Cocke census, back to Christian S. b. 1808 in 1860 Cocke census, back to Jackson b. 1808 in 1870 census and Jackson b. 1808 in 1880 census . Whatever his motivations were, its clearly the same person.*.

*Unless this was a Lassie (s) or Olsen Twins situation

Thank you, Private User that is a lot of very helpful information. I would enjoy reading Barbara Messer's books, although I don't seen any direct connection with my family. I can only trace ours back to my 3rd g-grandfather in Columbus Co., North Carolina, John Messer; and I believe his mother was Elizabeth Ward. Beyond that I know nothing of his ancestry, nor of his siblings.

The Regulators connection is interesting, as it seems to be a common theme in both sides of my family, to one degree or another.

But when it comes to surnames, locations and chronology, it's as important to learn who isn't directly related as distinct from those already known and proven. Familiarity with other branches helps eliminate confusion, and may also potentially lead to a broader and more connected family tree that includes cousins we might not have otherwise known anything about.

There may be no connection other than surnames, in many cases; but they're still all pieces of a very intriguing puzzle, lol.

Yes to all that except they were married in 1835 (not 1845).

Oh absolutely. This isn't my family either I just have an interest through the Wingfields. I look at other families if the surname is uncommon enough, but most importantly, research into neighboring families and families with repeated interactions can yield the richest hidden harvest. Funny I was typing about genealogy being interesting as a puzzle, and then looked up and saw you wrote the same thing.

Is John Messer the same as John Lawson Messer or was he John, the son of Christian Messer, of Hawkins County

Hard to say where that one belongs, with so little vital information. That plus a different wife, so I wouldn't merge those two.

There is however a John Messer on the 1840 Haywood Co. census on the same data sheet with Christian S. Messer.

Christian Messer was 30-40 age range; John was 20-30 age range. So depending on the accuracy of his birthdate given here on Geni, I would assume the guy on the census is his brother, John Lawson Messer

Links to all three censuses I've gathered, so far: 1840 in Haywood County with wife and three daughters under age 5; 1850 and 1860 in Cocke County, Tennessee. Other Messer households can be seen sharing the same data sheets on two of them. John Messer on the 1840; and on the 1850 Thomas Messer and Elihu Messer.

(Sorry about double posting this, it's just a little confusing discussing the same topic in two separate discussions, even though cross referenced it's hard sometimes to remember where the links landed.)

Which family was in Cocke TN?

Going upward from William Jesse Messer

Erica, I'm gathering more census material for Cocke Co. at the moment. I already linked 1840, 1850, 1860.

Now I'm gathering 1870 and 1880 (already found although not yet linked in the discussion; shows Jackson with his younger wife, a daughter and two grandchildren; no children of their own by the second wife).

Hawkins County is the 'other' Christian Messer family, the one that has been commonly confused with the Haywood Co / Cocke Co. TN branch.

I'm not working on the Hawkins County branch. I'm limiting my research to the Cocke County Messers.

To the Haywood and Cocke County families.

Actually, it’s looking like John Messer who married Mary Messer lived in Hawkins County, not Cocke. At least, his son William Jesse Messer seems to have been born there.

So that would place this John as son of Christian Messer, of Hawkins County & Sarah “Sally” Messer

Need more though.

There is a younger John Messer in the 1880 Cocke Co. census.

But as I pointed out earlier, there was also an older John Messer in Haywood County.

The older Solomon Messer in 1840 Cocke County. So he was in Cocke County already, while Christian S. "Jackson" Messer and John Messer were still living in Haywood County.

Still looking for the original 1870 census, but her we can see all Messer heads of households in Cocke Co., in that year:

MESSER Ausborn 13/104
MESSER Jackson 13/ 31
MESSER Joel 8/ 92
MESSER John 1/ 81
MESSER John 13/ 16
MESSER Mary A. 1/ 63
MESSER Samuel 13/ 34

This index lists each head of household plus the first person in that household by a different surname. It gives the surname, given name, Enumeration District/civil district (NP for Newport and PV for Parrottsville), and the family number within that enumeration district.

This index was transcribed and submitted by: Bruce Price.

It was work but I finally located the original 1870 census for Cocke Co. Beginning with the Gregory family (faded, hard to read):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6SSW-45W?i=324&amp...

Both Jackson and Samuel Messer here (family numbers 31 and 34, extremely difficult to read):

Solomon Messer (family #102 in the 1870 census) is the older Solomon.

It's looking more and more like Solomon the son of Christian "Jackson" and Jane Barnet Freeman may have parted ways soon after his mother's death and father's second marriage. His birth date seems to be in agreement with the Sevier County, TN death certificate.

In re: the John Messers -

In his will, Christian Messer of Hawkins divides his lands between three of his sons, Isaac, Jacob and John. This is the John you find in Hawkins and elsewhere Erica. The John Messer of Haywood, supposedly named John Lawson Messer, is clearly a different man. I mentioned this in the original explanation. But of course, in this providential moment there's lots of info flying back and forth quickly between the three of us.

I didn't take copious notes on this line, I'm a major speed reader so if it's not my direct line, and/or something mind blowing I usually keep reading. With that said, I recall that there were at least two other adult sons of Christian Messer of Hawkins. They.may have been older with land. One of these sons was Michael Messer who lived adjoining Christian in Hawkins. And I thought the other one may have been named Thomas but I forget. There was some kind of scandal / bankruptcy, I don't recall the details but it engendered a number of newspaper articles.

The Michael has a geni profile with a daughter that married a Patterson in Hawkins. I think this Michael had many more children
