I am seeking information on the Paterson family that arrived in Otago, NZ on the ship Auckland on 27 Oct 1875 and settled in Mataura. They originated from Fife and Auchterderran, Scotland.
The ship's passenger list states their names as John and Jane Paterson (parents) and 3 children: John, Helen and Elizabeth (Lizzie). Their ages are also stated which fits in with my research info that I have been able to obtain.
I would love to find out more about them.

I descend from John Paterson (b.1786) and Elizabeth Whyte who are the parents of the above John b. 1838.

HI LeahMay,

I think John died on 4 November 1918, aged 81. (This is the only death of a John Paterson in the NZ records that has an age at death fitting with a DOB of 1838.)

A John and Jane Paterson had a son called John born 6 December 1875. If this is your John and Jane, it probably means that their older child, John, died before this date (perhaps at sea?), and of course means that Jane was pregnant on the voyage.

These details are from the free NZBDM records viewable online: https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/

Hope this helps a little?
Kathy

Kia ora Leah May

I recommend having a look at this profile on Wikitree.: Paterson-3734. ohn Paterson was born on the 30th of July, 1838, in Auchterderran, Fife, Scotland, the son of John Paterson and Elizabeth Whyte.[1][2]

John emigrated to New Zealand in 1875. He was aboard the ship Auckland which left from Clyde on 31 July 1875 and arrived in Port Chalmers on 27 October 1875. The ship's passenger list shows John and Jane Paterson with their three children: John, Helen and Elizabeth (Lizzie).

The Paterson family settled in Mataura.

It appears that John died, aged 81, in 1918.[3]

Have a look here, do and index search , there are Patersons here

There were Paterson's who were sheep farmers at Cromwell/Bannockburn for a decades and I believe some of the family now live in Queenstown. To carry your search on wards try Cromwell library and Cromwell family history group.

Join www.familysearch.com ( free) and sign in the Paterson name see what shows up Cheers

Hi LeahMay. I'm sorry I have no access to information about the Paterson family. I hope you can find someone else that can help you. Carl

Kia ora all. Thank you for your responses - and so quick. I was so pleased to receive your messages and your very helpful information.
Re this Paterson family settling in NZ- I have not been able to find any NZ info on their children other than one of the daughters being Helen Ramsay Paterson. Helen married an Edward Walls Greenhalgh in 1891 in Mataura. My family have some DNA matches to Helen's descendants but these matches also have limited info or knowledge on the Patersons.
Nor can I find any info on John Paterson's wife, Jane Ramsay.
A frustration is that there are quite a few John Patersons that settled in the Otago region, so difficult to know which one is the John born 1838.

Hi from me again. I am not sure how to respond to you all individually re your posts to me. So apologies if you feel I have ignored your information.
To Claire re Wikitree profile. I have viewed this and believe the siblings noted in this profile are not correct.
The father of John Paterson b,1838 is John Paterson b.1786, his father being Shanks Paterson b.1765 married to Elizabeth (Betty) Robertson.
And to Kathy, that NZ BDM info on a John Paterson's death date and a child named John being born in NZ late 1875 is very interesting and is something more for me to look at.

It is worth trying: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers
You can filter results to Otago and a date range. Put speech marks around a name to get a precise result.

Sometimes names get altered, FYI, find a grave, mataura cemetery have two john Pattersons, note two t's, one in 1902, the other 1975, a bit late but still worth investgating. Worth a try searching council cemetery data bases are also good. As fiona says past papers is worth its value.
In this area, there is the Gore council cemetery database, Invercargill Council cemetery database.
All the best with your search.

Hi there is a group you could join called …Genealogy- NZ Super Sleuths….read the rules first….t good luck
