Lisa G. Tuorto Writes

Managers of Capt. Nathaniel Reed,

I am contacting you about this profile: Nathaniel Reed

This tree has Nathaniel's parents as William Rives\Ryves\Reeves and & Mary Robbins Reed. This is obviously not correct. I believe his parents are Samuel Reed b: 10/24/1702 in Fairfield Co., CT, d: 5/5/1760 in Fairfield Co., CT & Sarah Kellogg b: 4/5/1706 in Fairfield Co. CT, d: 12/25/1783, Fairfield Co., CT.

Also, I'm not sure were this info came from but I do not believe it to be accurate either:
This is correct:
Rebecca Reed (Isaacs)
Gender: Female
Birth: circa 1731
Frederick County, Virginia
Death: 1799 (63-72)
Pendleton, Anderson County, South Carolina, United States
I don't believe this is correct:
Immediate Family:
Daughter of Chief John Hoyter, Chowanoke of Bennet's Creek and Pidanske (Robbins) Hoyter
Sister of Sarum Chowanoke and William Hoyer

I believe Rebecca Isaacs is the d/o Samuel Isaacs, Jr. b: 1710 Va, d: 3/11/1760 & Anne Robbins b: 6/28/1710 England, d: 1778 VA.

There is a conflict with Rebecca and I believe that is why.
Rebecca (Isaacs) Reed, Chowanoke had a birth date after her parent's (Pidanske (Robbins) Hoyter) death date.
Tip: Correct the birth date of Rebecca (Isaacs) Reed, Chowanoke (born circa 1731) or check the death date of Pidanske (Robbins) Hoyter (died 1724).

Please review. Nathaniel Reed Sr. & Rebecca Isaacs are my 6th great grandparents.

Sincerely,

Lisa G. Tuorto

I find that difficult, as he was born in North Carolina.

There should be vital Records in Connecticut to rule in or out.

I agree parents as William Reeves & Mary (Robins) Reeves are unsupported, and have detached them.

Bedford, Kay Reed. "Origins of Nathaniel Reed, ca. 1720-1790." Essay. A Reed-Robins Family of the South Eastern United States, edited by Dorothy Barnum, Kay Bedford, Aryl-Jeanne Reed, and Glenda Swaim, 37–42. Pavo, Georgia: H & H Printing, 1996

The essay examines the possible origin families from the different provinces without asserting anyone as parents of Nathaniel Reed. His wife Rebecca Isaacs seems to be daughter of Samuel, with uncertainty showing.

I’m uploading the chart page to profiles.

Corrected Rebecca Reed parents to Anne Isaacs & Samuel Isaacs, Jr. and locked relationships.

Children of Nathaniel & Rebecca need checking and cleanup.

Thank you so much for your assist with this Erica and for making the corrections! I've long suspected that Nathaniel Reed was not born in NC. I have an alt entry (not sourced) that he might have been born in Franklin Co., MA. I'm incline to believe there or CT or VA given the date of 1730, as well as the fact that Rebecca was born in VA. In the current absence of absolute proof, I base my believe on DNA matches to Nathaniel & Samuel. Further research is definitely needed.

This is the Massachusetts man:

Nathaniel Reed

So he’s not the same person.

I urge you to read the research of Kay Reed Bedford in her book at FamilySearch. She was detailed and thorough, and concluded that his origins are still unknown.

The Rebecca Isaacs correction is huge. It’s a well developed pedigree.

What a tangled mess! I do agree that Col. Nathaniel Reed is NOT the one who married Rebecca Isaacs. Based on the records I've looked at on Ancestry and again, based on DNA matches, I believe Nathaniel b: 1730 was born in Fairfield Co., VA and is the s/o Samuel Reed & Sarah Kellogg. Samuel & Sarah had 9 children that I have found a general consensus on, all of whom were born in Fairfield Co., VA, including - Samuel in 1727, Nathaniel in 1730 & Timithy in 1741. I suspect there may have been more children some between 1730 -1741 that either died or are not listed, thus far.

You’re writing “Fairfield Co. VA.”

But Samuel and Sarah (Kellogg) Reed were of Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Samuel Reed
Gender: Male
Birth: October 24, 1702
Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut Colony
Death: May 05, 1760 (57)
New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut Colony

How do they have a child in the Carolinas?

Do you have a vital record for the birth of their son Nathaniel? It should be in Vital Records for the town (Barbour Collection).

I’ve now traced through descent of Nathaniel Reed, of Fairfield County son of Samuel Reed, Sr. & his wife Sarah Reed to a living descendant (if I have it right):

Tom Reed, U.S. Congress is Nathaniel Reed, of Fairfield County's fifth great grandson.

Relationship path: https://www.geni.com/path/Nathaniel-Reed-of-Fairfield-County+is+related+to+Tom-Reed-U-S-Congress?from=6000000201505274914&path_type=blood&to=6000000042485629075

The main source used is:

Reed-Read lineage. Captain John Reed of Providence, R. I., and Norwalk, Conn. and his descendants through his sons, John and Thomas, 1660-1909 by Wright, Ella Frances (Reed), 1859- [from old catalog]. (1909)

The property this Nathaniel inherited in Connecticut, along with his brother Hezekiah, is mentioned in Samuel’s 1760 will, attached to his profile:

Hope this helps. There seem to be many Natheniel Reeds born in this time frame.

OMG! I am soooooo sorry Erica! YES! Fairfield Co., CONNECTICUT, NOT VA!!! As if this isn't messy enough, I have to muck it up even further by saying the wrong location! I've been working on a different line that was in VA so I have VA on the brain. In my tree, it is correct as CT!

Yes, there are at least 3, maybe 4 different Nathaniels and the trees on ancestry have them alllllll mixed up, which has only added to the confusion.

Exactly! They couldn't have! Which is what I have affirmed all along. I do not have a source for Nathaniel's birth in my tree but I want to say I have seen one, but won't swear to it.

Yes to the book and Will as the source. I had intended to post those but ran out of time yesterday, so thank you for posting them!

Only 3? I ran across at least 5 on Geni. :)

Maybe we should use this project to try and get the lines better disambiguated:

https://www.geni.com/projects/Reed-Read-Reade-Family/1630

We need to clean up the children next. There’s a list in profile “about.” Is it good? Does it match the tree?

Thinking out loud here:
In looking at Congressman's Tom Reed's line: I have issue with Nathaniel Reed b: 4/29/1762, m: Eleanor Simpson being the s/o Nathaniel Reed (1730) & Rebecca Isaacs. They had a son, John b: 10/11/1762 and a son, Nathaniel 'Nathan' b: 8/13/1763 m: Jeanette Cobb so the dates do not work. Also, Nathaniel Reed b: 4/29/1762 was said to be born in Middlesex Co., MA. Nathaniel Reed & Rebecca Isaacs children were said to all be born in NC & SC. Based on these dates I'd say Nathaniel (1762) is NOT the s/o Nathaniel (1730) & Rebecca.

To complicate matters, the Reed-Read Lineage has the Nathaniel (1762) who m: "Eleanor ?" as the s/o Nathaniel (1730) who m: "?", the s/o Samuel Reed & Sarah Kellogg. So I question if Nathaniel (1762) was born in Middlesex Co., MA, how is he be the s/o of this Nathaniel (1730) born in Fairfield, CT?? This also puts back into question, is this Nathaniel (1730) the one who m: Rebecca Isaac? If not, then that would mean Samuel & Sarah might NOT be "my" Nathaniel's parents.

It looks like all of Samuel & Sarah's kids were all born in Fairfield Co., CT. Samuel & Sarah and most of their kids died in Fairfield, CT. Nathaniel & Rebecca's are said to of had at least their first 4 kids born in Rowan Co., NC between 1749-1756. Then, by at least 1762, the rest were born in SC where Nathaniel & Rebecca died.

There is little to no consensus among the trees on Ancestry as to who belongs to whom. At this point I'm more confused and have more questions than when I started. LOL I know I have many DNA matches that prove my line at least up to Nathaniel & Rebecca. I somehow need to find out what the DNA shows on FTDNA. If anyone has any insight to that, it would be extremely helpful!

Where do you see “ Nathaniel Reed b: 4/29/1762, m: Eleanor Simpson” on geni?

We have two “Nathaniel Reed Jr.” on geni currently:

I believe that “your” Nathaniel & Rebecca are not from this Connecticut family (or my different Massachusetts/ Connecticut Reade family). I do not think they’ve been identified.

Did you see that “Reed researchers in the 1920's identified over 100 Reed lines that came to America prior to 1700” ?

I just got lucky that my great great grandfather made it into a Reed / Read book. But it look 150 years before my family (me) traced him back to the correct Read.

This is on several trees on Ancestry:
Nathaniel Reed 4/29/1762 m: Eleanor Simpson b: 4/10/1772 in Rowan Co., NC, d: 1850 KY (?), d/o William Simpson b: 3/31/1721 in Baltimore, MD, d: 10/8/1825 in Logan, KY & Elizabeth Hocking\Hawkins b: 1740 in Rowan, NC, d: 1/30/1820 in Baltimore, MD. There were m: 1/28/1768 in Rowan, NC. I don't see any definitive proof, at this point to prove or disprove this.

I am questioning if "my" Nathaniel & Rebecca is the s/o Samuel & Sarah or not, but I also still question how the other Nathaniel could be born in MA when all of Samuel's other kids were born in CT. ???

With regard to the 1920's research, I tend to believe they don't mean over 100 separate, unrelated lines as that would be a lot for that time frame. I'm incline to believe they meant 100 families. Got to look at DNA matches closer!
