I don't know if Rabbi Akiva's origins were indeed from Spain or not, but Naftali Waksztettin told me that surely Rabbi Yitzchak Katz, the son-in-law of the Maharal from Prague, was not his descendant
Naftali told me that at that time there lived a man (whose name I do not remember) who was a great genius in the Torah, but very weak in genealogy, and he was the one who wrote the family tree of Rabbi Yitzchak Katz as if he was a descendant of Rabbi Akiva Katz...which is not the truth.
That person made a mistake in good faith, but his mistake was copied into many books that we rely on today
