It is impossible to determine from these South Carolina records just how many Gideon Gibsons lived in the Craven County, in the 50 year time span between 1731 and 1781. Four can be easily identified, but there is no reason to assume that there could not have been others:

  • A-1 [[Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River] Gideon], the man who came to the attention of Gov. Johnson in 1731, presumable died between 1752-57; m [[Mary Gibson Mary Gibson] Mary Brown]
  • A-11 [[Gideon Gibson, the Regulator Gideon Gibson, the Regulator] Gideon], the man who was “the Regulator” and died in Feb 1781, son of Gideon (A-I) and Mary (Brown) Gibson; m [[Martha Gibson Martha Gibson] Martha UNK]
  • A-152 [[Gideon Gibson Gideon Gibson] Gideon], a child born 25 Feb 1749, baptized at the Winyaw Church, Prince Frederick Parish, SC on 29 May 1753, son of [[John Gibson John Gibson] John] (A-15) and [[Jemima Gibson Jemima Gibson] Jemima Gibson].
  • A-112 Gideon, a child born 2 Oct 1752, baptized at the Winyaw Church, Prince Frederick Parish, SC in June 1753, son of Gideon (A-11) and Martha Gibson. Sic: son of Gibeon ‘Gibb’ Gibson & Martha ‘Mary’ Gibson

@Erica Howton

A-1 [[Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River] Gideon], the man who came to the attention of Gov. Johnson in 1731, presumable died between 1752-57; m [[Mary Gibson Mary Gibson] Mary Brown]

IF I am correct and understand Governor Johnson in 1731 to say 'the father of them here is named Gideon' then Gideon Jr., born 1695, father born say 1660-1670 may have been the Gideon died 1752-57 He would have been in 80-90s? Gideon born 1695 maybe having children 1715 earliest --- wouldn't have been 'the father of them here. Roger, John, Daniel, Gideon and Jordan were there.

A-11 [[Gideon Gibson, the Regulator Gideon Gibson, the Regulator] Gideon], the man who was “the Regulator” and died in Feb 1781, son of Gideon (A-I) and Mary (Brown) Gibson; m [[Martha Gibson Martha Gibson] Martha UNK]

If above is correct and this Gideon had land on Persimmon with SEVEN CHILDREN 1746, he is the Regulator, married Mary Browne before 1720,

GIBEON Gibson born about 1720 m. Martha died in Mississippi his the Gideon, designated Jr., in the 1746 land record with 2 children. Randall Lee and brother Mckinley were researching family history in 1870s, they said their father was either JOHN or ROGER. John was at the Congaree Fort and Roger on Wateree 1730s. Roger left a will did NOT name a son Gideon therefore I presume John Gibson to be father of GIBEON Gibson of Mississsippi.

IF Gideon 'is the father of THEM here;'Roger, John, Daniel, Gideon and Jordan', born 1690s then the two Gideon/Gibeons are related by their grandfather Gideon Gibson born VA about 1660-1670 - Gideon the son and GIBEON grandson, son of John?

Does that sound right? That is how I have them in my database. Theoretically

Please explain the coding you use as A-1, A-11, A-152 and A-112. The coding will help me to keep up with which Gideon you are referring. I know they are used in identifying a family's chain of descendants. I there such a tree established for the Gibson family from which the coding comes?

Hi Mary Frances Blakemore

I don’t know of a single tree that can be followed, at least at these early dates in South Carolina.

We’re trying to establish on Geni a “best we know so far.”

It looks to me like Valentine Van Zee (2005-2012) at

https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~valvz/genealogy/gibson_of_pee_dee.html

was using a standard register report numbering scheme, where a digit is added for each generation.

So, as example, A (progenitor) has children
A-1
A-2 …

A-1 has children
A-11
A-12 …

A-11 has children
A-111
A-112 …

I don’t have a complete register report from Valentine Van Zee to say for certain.

We’re suggesting here on Geni a variance to this report. It doesn’t look like the “separate” GIBEON Gibson (d. 1792 in Mississippi Territory) was accounted for.

Joanne Pezzullo - was Valentine this one, who has passed away?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Zee-1

“A” would equal the profile currently labeled TBD Gibson, I’ll add the A to his display name so it matches Valentine’s report.

‘A’ Gibson

With the children as I understood from https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000202688975856

Joanne is suggesting adjustments at https://www.geni.com/discussions/275302?msg=1680756

I’ll try to reflect that in the profile.

Hopefully I got this right. I wanted to stay with Valentine’s numbering scheme, if possible, for easy reference to the narrative bits; or cross reference them, anyway.

Added to ‘A’ Gibson

Val's work was superb, however she passed away I think it was 2011, so much of her research needed to be updated

I am fairly certain, Gibeon owned most of the land, and lived on Duck Pond/Sandy Bluff Gideon and Mary Browne Gibson lived at Queensboro on the Welsh Tract I think.

Gibeon associates put him with the Murphys Keithleys, etc. Gideon, born 1749 I believe is the one died in 1773, he married Courtney Keithley, her father in law gave her 'stuff' I'll post my research on the Bluffs, Tracts, etc later or tomorrow.

Val's work was superb, however she passed away I think it was 2011, so much of her research needed to be updated.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Since 2011 there’s been a book published, a documentary, more record availability, and more DNA testing, to say the least. But it’s the analysis that will get us looking better.

Finally found the Heinegg study.

https://freeafricanamericans.com/Gibson-Gowen.htm

Heinegg's work is lacking. He started publishing Gibson genealogy I think first book was 1995, and has updated it numberous times. If there are sources, trust it, if it is his opinion, disregard it.

There are so many ? Marks, words like 'may have been' 'likely' 'possibly' etc.. in the Gibson genealogy, much has been proven wrong over the years as more information has came online, especially the DNA Project.
