His paternal grandparents were Captain Juan Gomez de Portugal and Catalina Lopez de Nava. They moved to the New Galicia in America and were founders of Santa Maria de los Lagos in 1563 (Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, today). Apparently, their son, Manuel Gomez de Portugal, father of Francisco Gomez Robledo, was born in Portugal and remained there, when their parents moved to New Spain. The Gomez de Portugal likely had Jewish ancestry, for it is said that the mother of Captain Juan Gomez de Portugal was a Jew, Violante Gomes, 'The Pelicana'.
