What is the evidence that Sarah Gregory wife of John Gregory, of Norwalk was the daughter of a couple called Matthias ‘Matthew’ St John & Elizabeth St John

From the profile for John Gregory, of Norwalk

SECOND GENERATION

p.43, John I -- also see p.44, p.45, p.46, p.47, p.48, p.49, p.50, p.51.

John Gregory was born probably in Nottinghamshire about 1612 to 1615. He married Sarah St. John? (unproven). (Note that while several Gregory genealogists list Sarah's maiden name as St. John, this is disputed by St. John genealogists who find no possible record for her.) At the settlement of his father's estate he was called the eldest "living" son. ….

WIFE:[F2131].

Sarah ST. JOHN. [see PC M2-10]. Born (about 1614-S2,S5,S7,S9,S10,S16,S20)(in 1614-S3,S8)(between 1614-1616-S11)(about 1616-S15) (in England-S2,S5,S7,S9)(in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England-S3,S8,S10,S11).

She is said to be the daughter of Matthias ST. JOHN [F4262] and Elizabeth [F4263] (S5,S7,S8,S9).

She cannot be the daughter of the Matthias who was christened in 1628. It is by no means clear that her name was even ST JOHN. Source 19 says she was Sarah BENEDICT.

"After her husband John Gregory died, Sarah was represented at Fairfield Court as a widow on 9 October 1689. Her estate was inventoried on 28 October 1689. Therefore she died from 10 October to 27 October 1689. Her maiden name is not St. John and there is no evidence as to what her maiden name is. It is unknown."

Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without sources, that she was Sarah St John, daughter of Matthew St John and his wife Elizabeth. Lacking any evidence of this connection, she has been detached from these parents and her name changed to Unknown.

More recent DNA testing has suggested that Sarah was the daughter of Matthew and wife Sarah. However, auDNA (autosomal) traced this far back is not conclusive. See G2G question and answer.

No evidence has been found to support the existence of a family called St John in Nottinghamshire in the early 1600s. Not one baptism, marriage or burial with that surname in the online registers available at FindMyPast, FamilySearch and Ancestry.

Sarah is my 9th great-grandmother.
Thank you for looking into this.

It’s thanks to Private User for her hard work documenting, step by step. I agreed with her logic and executed the correction.

My 9th great-grandmother, also. Thanks to Jennifer and Erica.
