About Cicely Darke

She was probably a descendant of John Darke, a laborer listed on the 1522 Military Survey of Gloucestershire at Horton. He would have been over the age of 16 at the time of the survey. The survey shows him with personal property valued at 20s. and armed with a "bill, " an axe-blade and spear combined on a pole, used to unhorse cavalry.

Coldham cites the 25 January 1656 indenture of Edward Wale, son of Edward Wale of Tysoe, Warwick to serve Joseph Darke for three years in the Barbados. Coldham, 309.

The 1682-83 Visitation of Gloucester might provide a clue to the Darke ancestry. A Mary Cox, aged 43 at her death in 1715, was the daughter of Philip Cox alias Hayward of Forthampton, aged 30 in 1682, and Mary, daughter of John Sturmy of Swindon, Gentleman. She married John Dark of Alston near Tewkesbury. John and Mary (Cox) Dark were the parents of Richard, John, and an unnamed daughter. Richard Dark was forced to disclaim his right to a coat of arms at the Visitation, and was father of John Dark of Bredon, High Sheriff of Worcester. Richard's brother John died without issue in his father's lifetime.
