About William 1st Viscount Charlemont Caulfeild
He was a leading Cromwellian in late 1640s and throughout the 1650s but switched allegiance to King Charles II in 1660. He succeeded to the title of 5th Lord Caulfeild, Baron of Charlemont, co. Armagh [I., 1620] on 1 January 1644. In 1653 he captured Sir Phelim O'Neil, and had him executed for rebellion. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in December 1660. He held the office of Governor of Fort Charlemont between 1661 and 1664, for life, but parted with the office to the Crown in 1664 for £3,500. He was created 1st Viscount Charlemont, co. Armagh [Ireland] on 8 October 1665.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.
