The purpose of this project is to document the maternal lineage of all people with the coding mutation at 10086 and the HVR-1 motif 16124-16278-16362. These markers define the mtDNA haplogroup currently designated L3b, a subgroup of Haplogroup L3.

Origin
Haplogroup L3b is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. It has an estimated age of 6,500 years. In his popular book The Seven Daughters of Eve, Bryan Sykes named the originator of the L haplogroup Lara.
Distribution
Migrants carried L3b across what is now the Sahara Desert to the Mediterranean coast, and across the sea to the Near East. Today L3b is most common in West Africa. In contrast, its parent group L3 is most common in East Africa. L3 is also found among African-Americans.
Subclades of L3
- L3 (mtDNA)
- L3b (mtDNA)
- L3b1a (mtDNA)
- L3b (mtDNA)
