Origins
The name Pattyn probably first originated from Normandy, France. From there it spread out to other regions; most prominently The county of Flanders (9th Century). First know as Patin in Normandy, the name crossed the channel to England (1066) where it probably became known as Patten.
In Flanders the family has its origins in Bruges, Brugge in Flanders. Records date back to the 14th century, where the shoemakersguild of Bruges had members with surname Pattyn. The family would keep on having more power in the guild, and eventually during 16-17th century the guild would become hereditary under the family. The family would become even richer and adopt the guild's coat of arms as its own. In 1611 the family would help finance the rebuilding of the St-Anna chruch in Bruges. To this day one of the stained glass windows has the coat of arms and the family's name in it.
Name
The family lends lends their name to a medieval shoe with a thick shole. The family/guild made these shoes and gave it their surname.
