@Sarah's full name was Sarah Ann Altis Sheldon and was born in Defiance County, Ohio, 18 January, 1862 to Martin van Buren Sheldon and Amanda Ann (Smith) Sheldon (daughter of Obadiah Smith of Swan, Indiana). The family already had a son, Sarah's older brother "Seigh [or Cy] Sheldon" whose actual name was Cyrus Alfonso Sheldon. Her first marriage was to George Emeroh Deal (b. 1852) on 14 March, 1876 in Noble County, Indiana. Early on Sarah preferred to be called by the name "Altis" (this is found in early census records) and named her first daughter by her second marriage (to William Madison Depew) "Altis" Depew. The young couple--George Emeroh (he preferred to be called "Emeroh" to distinguish himself from his father George Henry)--moved soon after their marriage, to Carroll County, Iowa at the invitation of Emeroh's older brother, John Kelsey Deal, who eventually became a Republican senator in the Iowa State house. Here, in Iowa, their first two children were born: George Wesley Deal (Feb. 15, 1877--d. ?) and Cassius Erwin Deal (b. Jan. 31, 1880-- d. April 4, 1960). They then moved back to Indiana where Mina [Nina] May Belle Deal was born on Aug. 2, 1884. William Kelsey Deal (b. May 10, 1887) and Chester Arthur Deal (b. Aug. 2, 1888) followed. Sarah was pregnant with Glen Emeroh Deal when George Emeroh died at the age of 43 in February 1895 a few months before Glen Emeroh Deal was born (May 28, 1895). She was a widow until Nov. 23, 1897 when she married William Madison Depew. After her marriage to William Madison she preferred to use her first name, "Sarah." Her new husband, who had in his previous marriage, been using his first name "William," now switched to using his middle name, "Madison." They now lived in DeKalb County, Indiana. She bore him three girls: Altis Mabel Depew (b. Feb. 4, 1899), Lillie Gale Depew (b. March 29, 1901) and Goldie Viola Depew (b. Sept. 11, 1903). She was living with her daughter, Mina [Nina] Harper in Rochester, Michiagn when she died of a massive heart attack at 9:20 AM, Jan. 21, 1936 [souce for information about death: unpublished diary of Lillie Gale Depew (Mrs. Harold H. Maloney)]
