John Hindmarsh was the son of Captain Ralph Hindmarsh and his wife Sarah Scott. Born 5/8/1800, bapt.4/3/1801. he was the chief mate on the brig "Captain Phillip", ferrying convicts to TAsmanis and Norfolk Island. There is a family source vivdly describing his death when he fell from a boat in the Ganges and was eaten by a crocodile. He was Harbour master in Calcutta at the time. I have found a record of marriage between Caroline Jones and a John Hindmarsh on 16/12/1864, and a subsequent remaiage of Caroline to a ? Temleman about 1840 which seems to fit but I can find no record of his death. I would appreciate knowing where to go from here to substantiate this story.
