I am a descendant of Matthew Howard on my grandmother, Ann Howard Haskins' side According to the story handed down, Matthew Howard didn't back the monarch at the time. His property was taken, he was no longer a magistrate, he was to be hanged. He sold himself into indentured servitude and boarded a ship to Virginia. He worked off his indentured servitude and was given some land, which was named Albamarle. He believed that slaves should be indentured, then educated, taught a trade and then freed. He educated his slaves and had a Black overseer. I don't know how to research this, but would appreciate it if somebody could do that.
