GEDCOM Note
A birth/baptism record for Aaron has never been found. We know his date of birth from the Van Pelt Bible. The date of death in the Bible corresponds with the one on his gravestone in the chuchyard of the Reformed Dutcch Church on Staten Island. Both the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census for Neew York City have an Aaron Van Pelt. The 1850 census, which lists the names of family members, enumerates the the people we know from the Van Pellt Bible. The fact that he was the only Aaron Van Pelt in the New York City directories and Federal census returns in the period form 1840 to 1850, in my mind, identifies him as the son of George Van Pelt mentioned in 1844 probate documents to Aurt Van Pelt's will. The names of some of his children also lend additional credence to this theory: son George Herman and daughter Catherine Alida. Besides, my grandfather Alfred William Brooke III remembered visiting his Duryea relatives in New Utrecht when he waas a child. Phoebe Duryea was Aaron Van Pelt's paternal grandmother, annd Arron Van Pelt was Alfred's great grandfather.
GEDCOM Note
While his date of birth is provided by the family bible, his parents annd grandparents are identified by the will of his uncle Aurt Van Pelt. The 1880 Federal Census entry for his son John William states that he (Aaron) was born in New Jersey.
GEDCOM Note
The family appears on lines 9-17. Aaron is listed as Austin Van Pelt. Hiis age, profession, the names and ages of all other family members matcch the Aaron Van Pelt family. The census taker was probably confused by the fact that name of last person in the previous household was Austin.
GEDCOM Note
Grave #333. His tombstone reads:
Aaron Van Pelt born 21 November 1813 died 12 August 1853
