About 1st wife of Thomas Mayhew

Biography

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mayhew-74

The first wife of Thomas Mayhew is seen as daughter of Matthew Parkhurst without supporting evidence.
Yet we do read:
"3805. Abigail\Martha\___? PARKHURST\___?(755) (756) (753) was born about 1600 in Hampshire Co., England. She died before 1631 in England. McKay has first name of Abigail/Martha; McCoy has Abigail; Conover has Martha. "
"Banks says that there is no proof of the marriage, but tradition says her name was Abigail Parkus. Further particularization of this tradition says she was of the same family as George Parkhurst of Watertown, Massachusetts who came over with his sisters Deborah and Elizabeth. Their father was John Parkhurst of Ipswich, England, a clothier. Deborah and Elizabeth both came to reside on Martha's Vineyard, Deborah as the wife of John Smith and Elizabeth as Joseph Merry. (McKay)" ~• note then that this inference, that possible sisters Deborah and Elizabth both born Parkhurst lends a strong inference of relationship to Abigail

Thomas Mayhew[1] was baptized 1 April 1593 in Tisbury, Wiltshire, son of Mathew and Alice (Barter) Mayhew.[2][3]

He married first about 1620 _ _ ; she died before 1635.

Thought by some to have been Abigail Parkus (or Parkhurst).[4]

He married second Jane (Gallion) Paine, widow of Thomas Paine, London merchant.[5] She died after 1666 but before her husband.

Notes

"The Mayhew Family Of Martha's Vineyard" Charles Banks vol. III pp. 298 - 3:

12. THOMAS MAYHEW (Matthew4), bapt. 1 Apr. 1593 at Tisbury, Eng., is the Governor, first of the name in this country, whose personal history has been sufficiently detailed in the two preceding volumes. The name of his first wife is not known nor has any clue to the date and place of the marriage been found. Neither is it known when or where she died. [Iris Gardner <iris.gardner@worldnet.att.net> writes, "1st wife of Thomas Paine Mayhew was Martha Parkhurst b. 1595, d. 1635. Their son was Thomas Mayhew Jr., who married Jane Gallion."]
