About Alice Metherell (Hanscom)

Page 306-- ALICE HANSCOM, b. 12 Mar 1671 [dau of Thomas and Ann], was living at Mr. Shapleigh's in 1691, the mother of Black Will Jr. As Alice Mathrell, she was charged with bastardy in July 1693, and again in Apr. 1695, then accusing John Thompson. In 1695, called "Alice Hanscom or Medril, under 24". Not represented in [Hanscom] division 1719.

Page 478-- JOHN METHERELL, Kittery, accused by Alice Hanscom about 1690 and denied it, but married her -- needlessly -- as the child proved colored. See Black [William]. Metherell disappears. A little mulatto, possibly her child, called Jonathan in 1693, was at Mr. Hooke's in 1695. As Alice Madril and Mathrell, she was in court in 1693 and 1695 (accusing John Thompson), and she and her children were Kittery town charges in October 1695.... Peter Wittum read her fortune: if she lived to be 24, she would be very good and live above her brothers. Perhaps it came true, as she quieted down, or died; more likely the latter. Not represented in Hanscom division in 1719.

Pages 93-94-- WILLIAM BLACK, otherwise 'Black Will,' a slave of Major Shapleigh, manumitted by John Shapleigh in 1701, acquired 100 acres in 1696. In 1708 he bound his land to protect the town of Charles Frost's freeing Tony, and allowed him to build on his land.... He had a child by Alice Hanscom in 1691, and presumably another by Elizabeth Brooks in 1712, and his will, proved 1 Jan. 1727-28, provides that his wife Sarah be supported by his two sons. It gives to son William the money that Anthony Freeman owes for the 2 acres his house stands on...

Page 581-- JACOB REMICK, Kittery, shipbuilder [b. 23 Nov 1660], age 37 in 1698/99, 68 in 1729, had wife Lydia by 1684 and a 2d wife Mary by 1692. In 1695, gossip linking his name with that of the notorious Alice (Hanscom) Metherill, who was about to have a child, his wife Mary, furiously jealous, attacked Alice in the Hanscom home, in spite of Jacob's attempts to restrain her. The depositions in the resulting case give much local information...
