About Anthony Howkins

ANTHONY Howkins (1617 - 1674)

Biography

Anthony Howkins origins are unknown.[1][2] The surname Howkins generally comes from the English midlands in the counties of Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. He had an unknown first wife who died on 12 JUL 1655 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.[3][2][4] She was initially thought to be Isabel Brown by Savage but that was due to confusions with ANTHONY HOSKINS with not this ANTHONY HOWKINS. Savage's account has since taken criticism.[5] In vital records she is simply recorded as "Anthony, his w.[ ], d. July 12, 1655" and that is the only thing we know about her.[3]They had three children:

  1. Mary Howkins BIRTH 16 JUL 1644 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut[3] d 1691 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut m John Judd[2]
  2. RUTH Howkins b 24 OCT 1649 Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut[3] d 9 OCT 1724 Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, m Capt Thomas Hart 1640-1724.[2]
  3. Sgt John Howkins b 28 FEB 1651 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut,[3] died BEFORE 5 SEPTEMBER 1676 in King Philip's War. H married a Brinkhead.[2]

On 16 Jul 1656 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut he married second to Ann Welles / Wells (1619 – 1680) in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut the daughter of Gov Thomas Welles.[6][7][8]She was the widow of Thomas Thompson (1610-1655).[9][10][11][12] Please note he *NEVER* married Mary Welles.[13] They had three children:

  1. Sarah Howkins b 1657 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut d 1678 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, never married[1]
  2. Elizabeth Howkins b 1659 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut d BEFORE 1696 in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut m Paul Brinsmade (1648-1696)[1]
  3. Hannah Howkins b 1661 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut and died 23 JUL 1698 Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut.[1]

He was initially in Windsor were his first three children were born and he removed to Farmington where he lived the rest of his life.[14] He was a patentee along with Thomas Hooker and John Wadsworth all three called "Mr."[14] He served as deputy to the court and governor's assistant.[14]

"He had a lot granted to him eight rods wide. He exchanged places with Robert Watson, and later moved to the Dibble place. He added to this by purchasing from the widow Sumways the adjoining lot to the north. He sold both lots in 1654 when he removed to nearby Farmington." Source?

He died 28 Feb 1674 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, where he is buried: Find A Grave Memorial# 37886724.[1][15]

Howkins not Hawkins

A huge issue with this family is the spelling of the name Howkins with an “o” which has a distinct Y DNA haplotype[16] and comes from the midlands much further North in England in the counties of Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. Some have conflated the name with Hawkins with an “a” and tried to identify parents in Devon, England where the Hawkins spelling is common but not Howkins. This also lead to Savage's confusion with Isabel Brown who married Anthony Hoskins who is not this man. No origin or parents are known for Anthony Howkins. The name of his first wife is unknown. There is a baptism for Anthony Howkins at Brownsover, Warwickshire, England to Elias and Jane Howkins. Elias of Brownsover was the son of Anthony Howkins 1532 – 1628 and Mary Wells of Rugby, Warwickshire, England. But this is not enough proof that these are his parents. He certainly is not from Devon or the Southern counties where the name is spelled Hawkins. The erroneous idea that he was the son of Stephen and Ann Filet of Devon was based on the name being spelled incorrectly as Hawkins. And there is no relationship to Sir John Hawkins, the English admiral who was also from the South of England.

Will

His wil of 26 Feb 1674 names his wife Ann, children, John Ruth, Sary, Elizabeth and Hannah and son-in-law John Judd.[14][17]

From "A Digest of the Early Conn. Probate Records", Manwaring, Vol. 1, p. 134*:[18] The inventory of his estate was taken by Robert Porter , Thomas Barnes & John Woodruffe and amounted to 332-05-00. The children: Ruth, aged 24 yrs., John 22, Sarah 26, Elizabeth 14, & Hannah 12 years. In his will dated the 26th day of February, 1673/4, he gave his wife, "ann howkins", one third part of his entire estate except his house and homestead at Pork brook and the twelve acres of Land in the great meadow. The remainder of the estate and the estate after the death of his wife is to be divided amongst the children that survive including "John howkins, Ruth howkins, sary howkins, Elizabeth howkins, hanna howkins". He gave unto son, John, the homestead at pork brook, twelve acres in the great meadow and other moveable items. To son-in-law, "John tomson" one firelock muscat and a sword that was his father's; to his son-in-law, John Judd 5-10-00; to daughter, Ruth 'Howkins', a cow; to "Sara, elizabeth & hana howkins" he gave 1/5th of his estate after the widow receives her dower and the debts are paid. On April 1, 1664 Ann (Welles) Hawkins refused executorship. The will was distributed, except that Mrs. Hester Thompson, daughter of the dec'd, although not in the will was given 20 pounds from the estate.
