About Archibald MacNeal
GEDCOM Note
As with all the McNeals/MacNeals, there are varying versions of their names. Going with MacNeal for the most part since that is what is listed in obituaries/death notices, which the family likely would have placed. Some contemporary newspapers use the names intermingled.
Likely born in Lancaster County, PA, where he was living in 1860 with his wife and the first of his children, before moving to Philadelphia sometime before 1870. His father was born and died in Lancaster County as well. Would be interesting to know why - he continued to work in the carpentry trade, even after moving to Philadelphia.
Civil War service is doubtful. There is an Archibald MacNeal who served in the 26th PA Infantry, but he enrolled from Chester, not from Lancaster. In addition, there was another Archibald MacNeal, married to a Susan, who lived in Chester, but was 27 in 1850. This makes it unlikely this Archibald is the one listed in Civil War and Pension Records.
