m ---. The name of Thurstan´s wife is not known.

Thurstan & his wife had two children:

1. AMAURY Le Despencer (-[1198/1212]). "Almaricus Dispensator domini regis" confirmed the donation of "molendino de Dailintona", after the death of "Walterii de Cheisneto patris Amabilis uxoris mee…assensu Eue uxoris eius", to Eynsham abbey by charter dated to [1186/95][132]. King John confirmed "terra de Wordy et de Stanleia", which King Henry II had granted to "Waltero fratri suo", to "Almarico Dispensatori fil Turstan fratri Walteri fil Turstan heredi eiusdem Walteri" by charter dated 24 Apr 1205[133]. The Testa de Nevill records that "Almaricus Dispensator" held land "in Ewelm" in Oxfordshire in 1198[134]. The Testa de Nevill includes a writ of King John dated 1212 which records that "heredes Aumari Dispensatoris qui sunt in custodia Thome Bluet" owed property to the king in Oxfordshire[135].

m firstly AMABILIS de Chesney, daughter of WALTER de Chesney & his wife Eva de Broc. The Testa de Nevill includes a list of landholdings in Yorkshire, dated 1219, which includes "Thurstinus le Despenser" holding land "in Magna Rolendrich…in hundredo de Chadelintona" in Oxfordshire[138]. Bracton records a claim, dated 1224, by "Thurstanus le Despenser" against "abbatem de Abbendonia" relating to land for which "eidem Thurstano et Almaricus pater suus" had done homage to the abbey[139]. "Thurstan Despencer" made a fine "for having confirmation of the lands of Worthy and Stanley, which King Henry, the king´s grandfather, gave to Walter uncle of the aforesaid Thurstan, whose heir he is", dated [Feb] 1229[140]. The name "Walter" suggests that Thurstan´s uncle in this document was his maternal uncle.

Elizabeth (Alda), dau. of Sir Rowland Blewit. Thurstan le deSpencer was the first son. with his bro. Almaric, and other Barons, took up arms against King John (1199 1216); for which the King seizes the lands of Almaric, and gave them, in the 18th year of his reign (1216), to Ofbert Giffard, his own natural son; having the year before committed the custody of Thurstan to Sir Rowland Blewit. ALMARIC DE SPENCER, who served the office of sheriff of Rutland in the 34th Henry II., and again in the 1st of Richard I. From the latter monarch, to whom he was also steward, he ob tained a confirmation in fee of the lordships of Wurdie and Stanley, in the vale of Gloucester. The former of which King Henry II. had given to Wal ter, the usher of his chamber, son of Thurstan, and uncle of this Almaric, for his homage and ser vice, reserving a pair of gilt spurs, or twelve pence, to be yearly paid for the same into the exchequer. In the 6th of King John this Almaric paid a fine of a hundred and twenty marks and one palfry, to be exempted from attending upon the king in an expe dition then proposed to be made beyond the sea. Almaric de Spencer m. Amabil, daughter of Walter de Chesnei, by whom he had two sons, Thurstan and Almaric, and was s. by the elder, THURSTAN DE SPENCER, who appears, with his brother, to have taken arms with the other barons against King John, for, in the 18th of that reign, the king committed the custody of Thurstan de Spencer to Rowland Bloet, and gave away the lands of Almaric de Spencer to Osbert Giffard, his own natural son. Thurstan seems however to have regained his rank in the next reign, and to have twice served the office of sheriff for Gloucestershire. He died in 1248. Contemporary with this Thurstan, and doubtless of the same family, was HUGH DE SPENCER, whom King Henry III., in the 8th year of his reign, constituted sheriff of the counties of Salop and Stafford, and governor of the castles of Salop and Bruges (Bridgenorth). He was subsequently sheriff of Berkshire, and governor of Wallingford Castle. To this Hugh Henry III. gave the manor of Rithal, in the county of Rut land, and in the 21st of that monarch's reign, upon the death of John Scot, Earl of Chester, he was deputed with Stephen de Segrave and Henry de Aldithley to take charge of the castles of Chester and Beeston.
