Benjamin Carr died in 1653 leaving his four sons to live with relatives. The two older boys, Robert and Caleb were sent to Plymouth Colony on the 'Elizabeth Ann' on May 9, 1635, to live with their Uncle William and Aunt Susan (Rothchild) Carr. William and Susan and their small baby had sailed to America in 1621 on the 'Fortune' which was commanded by Capt. Roger Williams. They stayed in Plymouth Colony until June 1622, then with only an Indian as companion and a compass for a guide, they set out on foot in a SW direction through a trackless wilderness. After a journey of 48 days, they came to what is now Mount Hope Bay, where they built their cabin about where Bristol, Rhode Island is located now. Disputed Origins

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carr-38

Edson Carr, Carr Family Records begins with (p. 9) four brothers Benjamin, William, George, James, and their children.[1] Page 9

1. Benjamin b. London 18 Aug 1592; m. Martha Hadington, London 2 Sep 1613. died in London. His children:

  1. Richard Carr b. 5 Jan 1621
  2. Andrew Carr b. 5 Dec 1622

2. His brother William b. London 17 Jun 1597; m. Susan Rothchild London 16 May 1619; to Plymouth 1621 "Fortune; walked to Bristol; died 4 Jun 1672 had son

3. George b. 12 Mar 1620 George; Went to America in 1620 on the Mayflower

4. His brother James; ran away to sea.

The above claims to be from family Bible printed London 1585 belonging to Susan, wife of William, son of William, "My maiden name was Susan Rothchild. I was born in Devonshire, Eng., in the year of our Lord, A.D. 1598, April 30. I married William Carr, of London, May 16, 1619. He was born in 1597, June 17. Husband says he had a brother George Carr, who went to America in 1620. My husband has a brother Benjamin Carr, he was born Aug. 18, 1592. I am acquainted with him and his family. He has four sons, Robert Carr, born Oct 4, 1614; Caleb Carr, born Dec. 9, 1916; Richard Carr, born Jan. 5, 1621; Andrew Carr, born Dec. 5, 1622. My son George Carr was born March 12, 1620. My husband had a brother James Carr. He ran away to sea when a boy and we never heard from him."

Rootsweb has the following allegedly quoted from Watson's 'The House of Carr',1926. "Benjamin Carr died in 1653 [probably 1635] leaving his four sons to live with relatives. After a journey of 48 days, they came to what is now Mount Hope Bay, where they built their cabin about where Bristol, Rhode Island is located now." Note: This "quote" has not been found in the House of Carr, although except for the 1653/1635 error it basically follows the story from many of the early genealogies.

Proof ?

No records have been found to verify any of these dates. Of Susan Rothchild's alleged "bible" and migration story Anderson says: "The highly amusing account of the migration of the Carr family to New England is one of the more outlandish of its genre, and was probably concocted sometime in the nineteenth century.[2] Anderson's Great Migration series assigns no origins or parents for Robert and Caleb. Alleged parents William Carr Esq. and Ursula Brandling have been removed. Alleged children Robert Carr and Caleb Carr immigrants to New England have been removed. The unverified, perhaps fictitious, children Richard and Andrew have been left attached.
