About Charles Matson

Born after Fathers death. Lived at Wingham Court.
Was Churchwarden of the Parish of Wingham 1778-1779, 1796-1797, 1809-1810 and 1816-1817.
Leased Wenderton Farm from the Oxenden Family who were Lords of the Manor and substantial landowners. Believed that he continued to live at Wingham Court. Charles also owned a house, cottages and an Oasthouse in Wingham and leased a warehouse in Sandwich. The Matson hop business shipped goods via Sandwich to London. Charles was a collector of Land Tax and in 1798 is recorded as making payments on six properties in Wingham himself. Record of burial records Charles as aged 78.
After the death of Charles the properties were sold and the proceeds shared amongst his children.

Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills
Will of Charles Matson, Gentleman of Wingham, Kent 08 May 1832 PROB 11/1800
By the wording of his will it is clear that he disliked his son-in-law William Hart and did all in his power to ensure that Jane received her share of the Matson farm in Wingham and the family hop business in Sandwich. This was a time when married women normally had to give control of property to their husbands, so pages of the will contain detail of how Jane's brother Charles was to ensure the husband did not get her money.

Sarah POWELL

Aug 1845, Wingham

Record of marriage from St. Anne’s in the Westminster Archives. Witnesses were Ar Craddock and Ann Craddock. There is definitely no Wingham marriage record, which fits Charles and Sarah. There is a St Anne’s Westminster parish record. This is the most likely Sarah but cannot be absolutely confirmed. It is likely because the Matson family had a hop business that involved occasional travel to London.
In the East Kent Sessions Papers (Q/SBe/121 - Adjourned November 1830) there is this entry “ a) Deposition of Robert Matson of Wingham, describing the breaking of his mother’s threshing machine. c) Deposition of Robert Matson, stating that John Taylor was involved. Henry Andrews was also identified as concerned in the breaking by means of Deposition of others as well as Robert Matson These are dated 31st October 1830. Also Deposition of Caroline Matson of Wingham, concerning the breaking of her mother’s machine - date 20th November 1630.
A James Powell was Churchwarden of the Parish of Wingham 1799-1801and 1806-1807. This could possibly be a relation of Sarah.
1841 census Sarah Matson aged 80, born about 1761 and living in Wingham with daughters Anne, 30, and Caroline, 40.
