I can find no proof his father was James or grandfather was Patrick. Please contact me if you have sources!

He is not listed inthe 1840 Census for Liberty County. His place of birth is listed as Europe on the 1850 Census. The United States Census Records for 1860 for Liberty County, Georgia, shows that C. Debrow, age 46, was a Planter, and was born in New York State. This may be an error since his children and grandchildren reported that he was born in Ireland. Perhaps he immigrated through New York. His wife, Delilah, age 36, was listed as born in South Carolina.

Since Delilah could not read or write (a common state among men and women during this time) and the older children were in school, the census taker spelled the name as he heard it (phonetically) and this is the only time we found it spelled this way. The court records and other census records usually spelled it DEVERO, DEVRO, and sometimes DEVEAUX. In this record we found the children listed as Jane, age 15; Patrick, age 13; John, age 11; James, age 9; 0.(Owen) C. ,age 7; Mary D., age 4; and William, age 2. We also find that Delilah's mother, Levicia Johns, age 75, was living in the household. She was born in South Carolina.

In the Census records for 1870, we find the family still living in Liberty County, and Delilah Devero is listed as a widow, with the following children at home with her: John, age 21; James, age 19; Mary D., age 14; Willie L., age 11, and Alice T., age 9. There is no mention of Owen C., age 17, so apparently he was living in the household of another relative at that time, probably his sister Jane Lovene Tidwell. It was the rule to only list the names of persons living in the household at the time of the census, unless they had died during the year of the census. Also listed as living in the Devero household are relatives of Delilah as follows: Levicia John, age 85, blind; her daughter, Mary, age 50; and Mary's 18 year old daughter, Susannah L. Mary is Delilah's sister as shown in earlier census records.

There are records of several ship owners or captains by the name of Devereaux during the early 1800's, but the records we searched did not show any passengers by the same name. We are still researching this area and hope to find proof of when the family came to America.

As a matter of record, Charon Devereaux's daughter, Jane and husband John J. Tidwell, were given 760 acres as one-ninth part of his estate. We know from family records that Caron Devereaux was a Confederate soldier, and was wounded in that war. He was reported to have died four months before Alice was born from injuries received during this struggle. He was buried in a cemetery on his own plantation. This is now on private land, and there are no markers left to indicate it was a cemetery or who was buried there. The only person living that knew the location of the grave, marked only by a huge oak tree, is his grandson, daughter of Alice Devereaux Way; Ben Way of Ludowici, Ga., now 88 years old. He did not remember ever hearing if this was a family cemetery, or if Charon Devereaux was the only one buried there. When Charon's wife, Delilah, died in 1901, she was buried at Elim Cemetery where other members of her family were buried.

Since Charon did not leave a will, his widow, Delilah, was named administratrix of his estate, and was held accountable to the court for every penny spent. We found some of these records in the old Accounts and Inventories books in Liberty County court house. One of the earliest entries, dated 26 April 1859, from McIntosh County,Ga., shows that Caron Devereaux and William Middleton promised to pay to Lewis E. Ryals, Administrator of the estate of Celia Davis, two hundred dollars for value received. The next entry follows: "Rec'd May 16th,1863 of Mrs.Devro, administratrix Estate Caron Devro, two hundred and fifty-six dollars seventy seven cents. Signed L.E.Ryals". It appears that Delilah Devereaux paid this debt plus interest. There is no record of what happened to Mr. Middleton and why she paid the debt. Perhaps she became sole owner of the property purchased from the Davis estate, or Mr. Middleton might have been deceased. In the Accounts and Inventories Record Books, there are itemized purchases made and also items and goods sold from the farm to others. It gives a pretty good picture of life in those days. It is sad to see one item dated 20 April 1865, mentioning "amount due Administratrix in Confederate money brought forward from last returns of $1,561.82. On the above amount of confederate money the administratrix is allowed one dollar of current money for twenty of confederate, now valueless, which leaves the estate indebted to her of $78.09." I suppose she was fortunate to get that much cash from confederate money as so many received nothing.

From the records available, she appears to have made out pretty well during a time when the South was having a struggle to survive. She didn't spend much money for clothing and shoes after this entry; using money mainly for foodstuff and paying for some farm labor. It was during this time of reconstruction after the war that Delilah's relatives moved in with her, and were provided for. This was the custom throughout the South during these times of hardship--you took care of your own family, and helped your neighbors as you were able. One of the last records we found was a record of Distribution of the Estate of Caron Devero, dated 2 July 1866. "We the undersigned Freeholders being appointed and required by W.P.Girardeau, Ordinary of Liberty County, after being duly sworn according to law, have this day made a distribution of the Estate of Caron Devero, both real and personal. And have given John J. Tidwell, Legatee, seven hundred and sixty acres of land lying in Liberty and McIntosh counties. Also three and one third head of stock cattle, and two head of stock hogs and his proportional part of one Bay horse valued at ($100) one hundred dollars. Also to pay his proportional part of the debts of the Estate, and receive his proportional part of what is due the Estate, for which he gives a Refunding Bond, it being one-ninth of the Estate, and found to be his full and equal share of said estate. All the other heirs being minors, except the widow of said dec'd, we have left their proportional share of said estate in the hands and care of Delilah Devero, administratrix. Given under Our hands this 5th day of July, 1866. W.W. Zorn, J.P., and signed by Freeholders: W.T. Zorn, J.D. Zorn, Evan Wells, and J.L. Shaw."

Based on the records that we searched, we believe that the correct spelling of his name is CHARON (pronounced Karon) DEVEREAUX. This is the way all his children spelled his name and we feel they knew the correct spelling, since they agreed in every instance.

Possible origins

Many Devereaux's lived in County Wexford, Ireland. In County Wexford is a Parish named Chapel-Charon. Charon is the name of a family which originated in Cairon, Basse-Normandie, France. I wonder if Charon's mother or grandmother was a Charon who married a Devereaux.
