About Claude Styles Newbold

Claude Styles Newbold was born July 6, 1917, in Hillyard, Washington, the son of Cecil Lynn Newbold and Carmelita Bush Newbold. In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for University, St. Louis, Missouri, Cecil, 42, Carmelita, 40, and Claude, 13, were living at 7489 Kingsbury Avenue, a home they owned valued at $20,000 and they had a radio in their home. Also living in their home was a servant woman, Tekla Blanken, 24, from Missouri. Cecil and Carmelita were born in Colorado, and Claude was born in Oregon, per this census record. No occupation was listed for Cecil.

However, in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for St. Louis, Missouri, Cecil L. Newbold, 33, and his wife, Carmelita, 30, were living alone in a home they were renting at 5796 McPherson Avenue, a home they were renting. But where was Claude? He would have been about 2 or 3 years old, having been born in 1917. In this census record, it shows that Cecil was born in Kansas and Carmelita in Colorado. He was working as the Secretary & Treasurer of a paving company.

According to Cecil's U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card, he was born December 10, 1886, in Kansas. He was living at 5752 Westminster Avenue in St. Louis, and was described as being of medium height and build with dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was working as the Treasurer of Granite Bituminous Paving Company, and was married. No date was shown on the card, however, Cecil had married Carmelita January 31, 1912, in Jackson County, Missouri.

Cecil was the son of John B. and Ada C. Newbold, both of Iowa, and was living in Rosedale, Wyandotte, Kansas, during the 1910 Census. John was 45, Ada, 39, and Cecil, 21. John and Ada had been married for 23 years and had given birth to only one child. John was working as a conductor for a railroad and Cecil as the auditor for a paving company.

By 1940, Cecil was living with his parents, John and Ada, in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, and although he was listed as being married, he may have either been divorced or widowed since his wife Carmelita was not living in the home. They were listed as follows: John, 76, Ada, 68, and Cecil, 50, and John was still working as a motorman for a street car railway and Cecil as a paving and construction contractor.

When Claude completed his U.S. World War II Draft Registration Card on October 15, 1940, he was 23 years old and was 5'-10" tall and weighed 155 pounds, and had brown eyes and hair and a light complexion. He was working for J. Merle McElroy as a clerk in a pharmacy in Orlando, Florida. He gave the name of his next of kin as his mother Carmelito Bush Newbold.

Two weeks later he married Florence Lorene Eubank and they were listed in a U.S. City Directory for that year living at her parents home at 740 Mills Avenue, and he was working for the U.S. Army. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs file for Claude, he enlisted October 27, 1942, and was released on December 6, 1945.

By 1959 he was working as an installer for SBT&T in Orlando, Florida, probably Southern Bell Telephone Company, which at the time may have been known as Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph, because I believe there was still telegraph service through the 1950's. He and Florence were living at 1308 Asbury Avenue, in Orlando. The were still living there in 1981. Claude passed away at the age of 72 years old on July 15, 1989, in Orlando, Orange county, Florida.
