Notes on Daniel Gillie Bundrant

Daniel Gillie Bundrant was born 24 January 1838, probably in Warren or Cannon County, Tennessee. By 1850 the family had moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee, and were still there in 1860.

Before the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Daniel and other Bundrant family members moved to Fayette County, Texas. He was in Texas at the time he joined the Confederate Army in Fayette County. Daniel G Bundrant served in Company "I" Regiment 5th Texas Calvary, or Texas Mounted Volunteers in the Confederate Army - Civil War. He enlisted Sept 25, 1862 at La Grange, Texas in Fayette County. Daniel's second wife, Mrs. Mary S. Bundrant of Coryell County, Texas, filed a Widows Application for Pension on August 5, 1929. In these records it states she is the widow of Daniel G Bundrant who died 15 Feb 1910 in Coryell County, Texas. She married him on 1 June 1875 in Warren County, Tennessee. She was born on June 1, 1854 in Grundy County, Tennessee. She has lived in Texas for 49 years. Signed with her mark "X" - meaning she was illiterate.

Also in these Pension records is an Affidavit of Witness for Daniel Gillie Bundrant - April 3, 1929 in Coryell County, Texas by Daniel Lloyd Bundrant, a nephew of Daniel G Bundrant. The statement or affidavit is:

"I was 4 years old when he [Daniel] left to serve in the Army he left with my father, I remember when they rode away, my father could not write and Daniel G Bundrant did all the writing while in the Army [see Civil War Letters]. Daniel G Bundrant came back on a furlough and i [sic] saw him then with the soldiers uniform on, I saw him when he returned in 1865, and for these reasons I know of my own personal knowledge that Danile [sic] G Bundrant did serve in the Confererate [sic] Army for 3 years. I have no interest in the pension application of the applicant. I am 71 years of age and was born in the year 1858 and have lived in Coryell County for 59 years."

Official records of service state that Daniel Gillie Bundrant served in Company "I" Regiment 5th Texas Cavalry C.S.A. (5th Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers) (2nd Regiment Sibley's Brigade). He enlisted 25 September 1862 at La Grange. Muster Roll November 1, 1862 to January 31, 1863 shows him to be a private. Prisoner of War record shows that having been surrendered by General E. Kirby Smith C.S.A., to Major General E.R.S. Canby, U.S.A., date not stated, was paroled at Columbus, Texas on July 17, 1865, a private. NOTE: He is also shown as enlisted in Austin on October 2, 1862. The 5th Texas Cavalry served under the command of Brigadier General Thomas Green.

Tax rolls show that, at the time of filing for Pension, Mary S. Bundrant owned property valued at $1000.00 and a homestead value of $2000.00. She owns an undivided one-half interest in the property and her children own the other half. She and her husband owned several hundred acres of community lands at the time of his death. They left several children, who now own their father's half interest, it is all rendered in the mothers name, but some of the children live with her on this land. The land consists mostly of cedar breaks, mountains, and canyons, with a few little patches of cultivation running up the hollows. The land is located about 20 miles from Gatesville almost on the Coryell-Bell County line.

Daniel's second wife, Mary S. Bundrant died 12 June 1939 near Killeen, in Coryell County, Texas. She was residing with her son, S.D. Bundrant.

After his service in the Civil War, Daniel married Mary Jane Timoney on March 12, 1868 in Bastrop County, Texas. Daniel and his new wife Mary Jane are listed on the 1870 Fayette County, Texas census:

Residing next door was Daniel's uncle Peter Bundrant - who would eventually raise Daniel and Mary Jane's Daughter Margaret Ann Bundrant, my ancestor. Daniel's mother, Lucy, also resided with them.

Daniel and Mary Jane did not remain married very long - possibly only four years according to a letter written by Margaret, their daughter stating she was three years old when they divorced. After the divorce, Mary Jane left her daughter Margaret with Daniel's uncle Peter and she remarried a man named Sterle Stroud. I have located no further records on Mary Jane.

Daniel and his mother Lucy returned to Warren County, Tennessee, and he married there on June 1, 1875 to Mary Statery Walker. Pension application of Daniel's mother, Lucy Gilley Bundrant, states she was living with son Daniel in Warren County, Tennessee in 1880 when his house burned, destroying her records. They then returned to Coryell County, Texas and had several children.

Margaret Ann continued to reside with her "Uncle" Peter as shown in the 1880 census:

Her relationship with either her mother or father is unknown but a young Margaret is in a photo with Daniel and his second wife - demonstrating a relationship of some kind.

Daniel Gillie Bundrant died February 15, 1910 and was buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Coryell County. Shiloh Cemetery is located in a part of what is now Fort Hood. When Fort Hood was built in 1942 they moved his grave to the Killeen Cemetery.
